On November 2nd 1917 the British foreign secretary Lord Balfour issued the Balfour declaration. Balfour Declaration - Text/Non-UN document (2 November 1917)

At the time Palestine was ruled by the Ottoman Turks. But the British had launched a campaign to conquer the territory. The Turks beat off the first attacks but soon after the declaration was issued the British broke through. One of the British army units involved was the 10th Irish division which had earlier suffered terrible casualties at gallipoli. The Palestine campaign became controversial because it diverted reinforcements from the important western front. In 1918 many batalions from the 10th Irish division had to be rushed back to France to stop a huge German offensive which had caused huge British casualties.
