Fine Gael will force Brian Cowen to defend Willie O’Dea in the Dail this week after the defence minister was accused of giving false evidence on oath in a High Court libel case.
The matter has already been raised in the Seanad by Eugene Regan, Fine Gael’s spokesman on justice in the upper house, who accused O’Dea of committing perjury, questioned the minister’s fitness for office and suggested he resign. “We have been used to ministers lying, but ministers lying on oath is a new low,” said Regan

At long last, somebody is beginning to move to get at the court jester O'Dea. Maybe FG are beginning to get a bit of bottle after all.

O’Dea denies perjury and says he made an honest mistake. He has sent a solicitor’s letter to The Sunday Times seeking an apology, damages and legal costs in response to an opinion column about his affidavit in last week’s edition.
This is not going to go away for O'Dea.

Haughey sacked Brian Lenihan for pushing out two inconsistent stories. The PDs insisted on the sacking. What is moron Harney doing about O'Dea? Oh sorry, she probably hasn't woken up since O'Dea admitted it all. Let her sleep. She's doing a lot less damage than when awake.

At last some smart politics from FG. They could have done this ages back but Kenny the ditherer dodged it... just the same way he dodged bringing up Ahern's finances in the 2007 campaign

Looks like the Lee story has forced him to up his game

The hypocracy of the man!!
And it was hypocricy. Did it because the PDs threatened to pull out of gov if he didn't. Otherwise, he wouldn't have given a toss.

It has always puzzled me. So many chances to go for the jugular, to whip up popular discontent with the government, and every time it's been like Denis Healy's description of Geoffrey Howe, 'like being savaged by a dead sheep'. Mindboggling.

If not now, then when?....

It's a bit like nuclear deterrence and mutually assured destruction. FG are afraid to press the big red button in case the FFers get nasty and start rooting around for skeletons in the FG cupboard.

Exactly. If he had bad mouthed somebody from any other party he would have been gone by now with the medja boasting how they hold politicians to account.

Alas (or otherwise) the PDs are no more. There's another crowd there now... Keens? Means? No, no - Greens, that's it! Don't they have loads of ethics and standards and all that stuff? Maybe they'll stand up for truth and justice.

Or maybe not.

This is good news, nice to see FG holding these knackers to account. Willie should be charged with this, and be put in the slammer. Cowen next for criminal negligence for what he did not do when minister for finance, and ahern for perjury.

Indeed it was hypocrisy. Yes, hypocrisy.

Great news alltogether!:D

I'm sure Willie will do the honourable thing and resign from being a TD.

He has a way with words that man.

"The second myth is that the Nice Treaty will mean mass immigration from the new EU member countries in Eastern Europe. This is probably the most odious of the myths propagated by some in the "No" campaign."
[Minister Willie O'Dea, Sunday Independent, Summer 2002].
