I just realised today is the anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

The assassination of United States President Abraham Lincoln took place on Good Friday,[1] April 14, 1865, as the American Civil War was drawing to a close. The assassination occurred five days after the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army of the Potomac. Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated,[2] though an unsuccessful attempt had been made on Andrew Jackson 30 years before in 1835.

Incidentally I had not known there was an Irish-American who had been a close conspirator of John Wilkes Booth, though he seemingly took no part in the assassination of Lincoln. Nonetheless he got a life sentence nad died in prison. Michael O'Laughlen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Irish-American solder played a major role in hunting down John Wilkes Booth. Lieutenant Edward Doherty led the cavalry detachment that trapped Booth in a barn at Port Royal, Virginia.

Doherty had served under the Fenian from Sligo, General Michael Corcoran, who died during the war in a fall from his horse.

Incidentally, much has been made of the supposed "innocence" of Dr Samuel Mudd who treated Booth for the left leg he broke jumping onto the stage at Ford's Theatre.

In fact, the evidence is that Mudd was involved with the conspirators and Confederate Secret Service, and knew very well who Booth was and what he had done. He did inform the authorities but delayed as long as he could until Booth had got well away.

Mudd was lucky to escape hanging. He did behave heroically in jail, using his medical skills to treat fellow prisoners and guards during a yellow fever outbreak. He was pardoned, but the sentence has never been expunged.

Samuel Seymour was the last surviving who had been present at Ford's Theatre the night of the Abraham Lincoln assassination. He died in 1956 aged 96. He didn't see the actual assassination but saw Booth jump from the balcony. Shortly before his death he appeared on this American TV show

A series of odd facts about the Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations:

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

And! Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called 'Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe,Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe

The conspiraors also attempted to kill William Seward, Lincoln's secretary of state. However he survived

Seward was a tremendously important figure in the Lincoln administration. It was Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians

John Wilkes Booth joined the Richmond greys in 1859 so as to able to attend the hanging of John Brown.

If such an event happened today it would be the equivalent of a Hollywood A list actor shooting Obama at a movie premiere.

Utterly useless trivia.

One person arrested was Irishman Frances Tumblety, who was friendly with one of the conspirators. He was later released.

Subsequently he acquired far more fame as one of the main suspects in the unsolved Jack the Ripper cases, and one that seems to have gathered momentum in recent years as he was linked to the infamous "From Hell" letter.

You meant to say:

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe,Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe.

Better that way.

Actually, Booth ran a fairly effective terrorist cell, assisted by Confederate agents, based around Mrs Surratt's boarding house. He also sent a man to assassinate the vice President, but the man chickened out and got drunk instead. There may also have been someone sent to kill Grant.

The original plot was to kidnap Lincoln as he came from the Soldier's Home, a house outside Washington where he sometimes stayed. They intended to smuggle him south - along the same route Booth used to escape from Washington. But the war ended abruptly, and Booth changed plans.

The last straw for him was Lincoln's 2nd Inaugaural Speech (Booth is seen in the crowd in a panoramic photograph). He is supposed to have said "I won't have n*gger citizenship. I'll put him through for that."

It is sad that the murder of America's greatest President had its roots, not in Southern patriotism, but in racial hatred.

Lincoln's Inaugaural Address .. Booth is supposed to be in the upper red circle.

Booth is not convincing as a Southern patriot because he did little or nothing to help the Confederacy while the war was on. Only the loss of the war and the triumph of the Republicans and Abolitionists spurred him to action.
