The Ontario Liberal Party has been in power for 15 years.
Following the 2014 elections, they held 58 seats (out of 107).
Their leader, Kathleen Wynne received 57% of the General election votes, thereby retaining her position of Premier.

The Liberal Party won a majority of seats in the legislature, allowing its leader, Kathleen Wynne, to continue as premier, moving from a minority to majority government. This was the Liberals' fourth consecutive win since 2003 and an improvement from their performance in the 2011 election.

However, following yesterday's elections ...
Ontario's Liberals have lost official party status in the legislature after securing only seven seats in the provincial election.

Wynne has unceremoniously resigned today.

The big winners were the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, led by Doug Ford (brother of Rob).
From 28 seats in 2014, they won 76 seats yesterday handing them a majority government.

Rob Ford now becomes Premier.

Ontario has now joined the US (Trump), UK (Brexit), Hungary, Austria, Italy and many others in a stunning shift to the right.

Where are all the Leftist Liberals going wrong ?

He's not Trump like on immigration though so I think the parallels are a bit exaggerated. But it is the latest in a long line of electoral defeats for the Left throughout the West. He has praised Trump's management of the US economy. His hair is quite similar though and his criticism of the media.

They have nothing left to offer anymore except identity politics with its accompanying censorship, intimidation and support for mass immigration. Most sane voters are not going to vote against their own interests.

He's a populist slob but nowhere near Trump's level

As for his popular appeal, it has little to do with conservatism and more to do with fiscal irresponsibility to buy votes

20% tax cuts for low and middle income earners
massive increase in healthcare spending
And cut the price of booze (I kid you not)

If you are dumb enough to believe you can implement all of thees (especially the first two), without long term adverse fiscal consequences, then you will of course stick an x beside his name

It's a carbon copy of FF's 1977 election manifesto that the masses swallowed as well

They really think that working class people are not able to work out that the interests of working class indigenous people are way down the list of leftist liberals . Leftist liberals take their own electorate for granted and think that this electorate should vote for ‘ The Great Leftist Liberals “ whether it is for their own benefit of not = Bonkers stuff .

I wouldn't classify Doug Ford as Conservative, he is a populist

Cyp
Funny how the left always characterise conservatives with a majority as populists.

Liberal does not equal Left....sheesh.

Anyway, regional elections in Canada....really? Are we inferring Canada is going to become a Trumpist state?

Today it's Podunk Canada.

Tomorrow the world!

Even fascists have to talk themselves up. Liberals had been in for a long time, nothing wrong with letting Ford f*ck things up like all fascists-populists do eventually. It will teach people the consequences of corrupt populism. There is no country where cheap populism has worked.

They really have lost the plot. Identity politics is fuelling their self immolating insanity. They have never forgiven the working classes for committing the original sin of voting for Thatcher/Reagan. They have despised them ever since for not listening to their wisdom and not doing "what is good for them".
They are now nation to nation being given a judgement on their self regarding sanctimonious. May it continue.

Leftist intellectuals hold the working class in contempt because they will not bow down to the greatness of leftist intellectuals .

It doesn’t work well when you want working people to vote for you . A Big Flaw .

I also notice that Ford campaigned hard among poor immigrant communities, and those form part of his base.

So this was hardly a big vote against immigration, as the spin of the OP makes out.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jun/08/ontario-election-results-populist-doug-ford-to-become-premier

Let's see how those poor immigrants like it when he gets around to his tax cuts for the rich.
Immigrants are well capable of working out that too much immigration is not good for them . Its not rocket science .
