I was at a school event in Rathcoole lately and most of the class were African.

I know a lot of Irish emigrated to other countries but does that mean now that the rest of us are to be punished by paying all the costs associated with such high levels of immigration.
They didn't emigrate to Africa, Asia or Eastern Europe tho.

How many British, American or Australian kids were at the school event, or places the Irish do and did emigrate too?

We should aspire higher than China and Nigeria- not very advanced democracies.

As Gerry Adams stated: all are welcome in Ireland whether they have been here 4 months or 400 years.

Yes we know.

Just as we know they won't be housed anywhere near where he's living.

As long as Ireland is a secular, democratic republic, with strong human, civil, and political rights standards, and with strong protections for individual liberty and for freedom of speech, then I care very little as to its national or ethnic make up.

Anyone or anything that might go against those goals and values should be kept out of the state. Within the bounds of our economic ability to absorb then, everyone else is welcome.

Well clearly that is not the case right now.

I was rasied in Neilstown and would rather live side by side with Nigerians and other immigrants than a scumbag from Rowlagh who shoots up every day. Its not racist to have an opinion on immigration but it is racist to judge them by skin colour or to make xenophobic sweeping generalisations which so many on this site are prone to. How are we paying the high price of immigration?
As a matter of interest Fluffy have ever actually lived beside Nigerians?

Because if you haven't then how the hell would you know what its like?

I've worked with them, if that counts. The ones I worked with were lovely people, although they were quite religious and tended to be a little public about that aspect of there lives.

That's evolution baby. Your pissin in the wind buddy. Jump on board the multicultural love train!!! wahooooooo:D:D:D:D
i hope you're being facetious because only a complete lunatic would argue that there are no negative consequences to immigration. Even the most liberal lefty nutjob would still have some reservations about importing, say, a million Somalians into Ireland.

A thoroughly respectable viewpoint.

I did indeed when I lived in Parkwest for two years. I had Lithuanians to my right, Nigerians below me and a Pakistani doctor and his wife to my left. I got on very well with them , the Nigerians used to invite us for dinner and celebrations of their wedding anniversary. I work with Nigerians and other nationalities too. +1 on Catos point they loved their religion!

Good Point, & if the 80 million Expat Irish people return we may have a country! & get ride of this Elite that have screwed us
This is the sad hypocrisy of the racist "send them all back home" element in Ireland today. Most of them seriously believe in a God-given entitlement of the Irish man/woman to go anywhere they please, visa or no visa. When an Irish person becomes an illegal emigrant, they are the "undocumented", I won't describe the words usually used to describe even legal migrants here.

If we want to send others back home, then we will probably find a very cold welcome elsewhere. That will be the consequences, like it or not. Countries with perceived generous migration policies tend to have reciprocal policies in return. Turning Ireland into a fortress will make our migrants less welcome elsewhere.

I think that you have missed a small point; the counties to which Irish people have emigrated in numbers would not be the countries from which many Irish people would be concerned about immigration coming from.

There is a horde of wannabe europeans packing the southern shores of the mediteranean - they come form poor generally overpopulated countries (in terms of resource rather than landmass) and are being advised of where to travel to and how.

It was no coincidence that foreign birth rates rocketed when we screwed up our Citizenship Rules when altering articles 1 and 2 of the constitution. We even had situations of african and asian women being taken directly from the airport to maternity ward.

However to grow as a nation, some immigration is required and certainly in the area of specialist services and professions. We also have an obligation to absorb our fair share of refugees (not economic migrants) and to be fair to all it is probably best we introduce a quota system for unskilled emigrants.

We need to mature a little and grasp the immigration nettle - it is not rascist to discuss the issue, it is how you discuss it which matters. Additionally, the truth must be seperated from the lies and if some of the wilder stories are actually true, then we need to become more involved in deciding where our money is spent. If there is no truth in the wilder stories then this needs to be made known.

Myth or Truth: Illegal immigrants are still pouring in through Belfast?
Myth or Truth: Africans have been given free cars to get into the taxi business?
Myth or Truth: Immigrants go to the top of the local authority housing list?
Myth or Truth: Immigrants are entitled to more handouts than the Irish?
Myth or Truth: The top level of the drug and prostitution business in Dublin is operated by the Chinese?
Myth or Truth: Lack of immigration controls suited FF and their developer friends as it provided a constant flow of Local Authority or Health Board tenants.
