That works at over €200k an acre for a 2.5 acre site in a rural village outside Loughrea. That looks well excessive. No wonder Eamonn Gilmore had no comment on the price paid.

Quite right not to comment. It's not news, and it's only be paid attention to because she's married to Gilmore.

"All sites purchased by the OPW on behalf of the Department of Education are subject to a valuation being carried out," the OPW spokeswoman said. "The commissioners' valuer inspected the site and advised that the agreed price was reasonable."

I don't know about that. The Labour party has never been slow in criticising the prices paid by the government for land and property, and hinting at cronyism.

If it was a FF TD whose wife while being the Chief Executive of a VEC did such a deal with the Department of Education, I have little doubt Gilmore would have something to say on the subject.

Sauce for the goose and all that.

It would be interesting indeed if the Gilmores make a joint Tax return

On a joint tax assessment basis the tax is paid by both parties

An additinal voluntary contribution would buy a lot of social justice

From each according to his ability to each according to their need, and all that

If it was a family member of Enda Kenny this thread would be 10 pages of abuse directed at him by now.

If you charge the state over 200,000 euro an acre for a school site in a remote rural area, does that mean you are an economic traitor?

Not so - if it was an FFer, we would be hearing about a scandal of such immense proportion as to raise questions about the suitability of the candidate for public office. And, of course, every official involved would be an FF hack appointed as a reward for contributions to the party!!

But how many pages would it be if it was an FF TD? Mind you, it might be fewer than one would imagine; judging by some of the post here on FF, some posters' heads would explode with outrage. :D

Ah! But it was 'professionally' valued at the time!

I mean, why shouldn't the Gilmore family benefit from the bubble economy just like all the rest of us?

Surely the Gilmores are believers in free market economics as well, just like all the rest of us little piggies, with our snouts in the trough of make believe swill!

And sure anyway, we could afford it at the time.......couldn't we?

Ask Joe O' Toole.

The problem here for Gilmore is time & time has criticised the wasteful spending by the OPW and here he and his family got 525k for 2 measly acres.
He is coming across as a hypocrite here , he was right on one thing the OPW are a wasteful shower 525k for over just 2 acres is scandalous
