Oscar Pistorius, South African Paralympic star, is alleged to have shot dead his girlfriend. It is surmised that she called early in the morning to surprise him for Valentine's Day and he mistook her for an intruder. Allegedly, he shot her 4 times.

It's a very sad state of affairs where people feel the need to go to bed with a gun for protection, although some in Rural Ireland would say we're there already.
He's a very inspirational man so I hope it really was an accident but very hard to live with yourself after that.

Apparently, this type of accidental shooting (assuming that's what it was) is not unprecedented in crime-ridden South Africa. A few years ago a businessman shot his daughter dead in similar circumstances.

Tragic in every way. South Africa is a pretty much lawless country though, hence the need in many people's mind to have a gun on the bedside locker.

Whether it was through mistaken identity or during an argument or something like that, it is clearly a result of having guns within easy reach in homes.

I realize that is because of the violent situation in SA, but as in the US, people killed by guns in these places are often the victims of their own guns or those of family and friends.

Frightening.

Ireland also has a problem with guns. Just look at West Dublin. Or the recent event in Dundalk.

Leaving Leveller's attempt at levity aside, wouldn't your heart go out to the guy?

His life is now over, he will go to jail and as a disabled person that won't be easy, and he will have that moment on his mind for the rest of his life.

God help him.

And God help her family in their loss too.

A police statement said that a 30-year-old woman was "fatally wounded" in the
early hours of Thursday morning at a home in the Silverlakes complex in the
Boschkop area of the capital.

The woman had been wounded in her head and upper body. Paramedics were at the
house when police arrived, but she died at the scene. A 9mm pistol was
recovered.

Police gave no further details about the woman's alleged relationship with Mr
Pistorius.

Horrible, shocking news.

This was her tweeting yesterday:

@reevasteenkamp

What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay
and replying to someone:

That sounds amazing! Wow that's what it's all about! It should be a day of love for everyone :) may it be blessed!
An absolute tragedy.

Police say there were previous allegations of violent incidents.

Not looking good.
