a pretty sexist move one would have thought, if women are as smart as men why would they need a leg up in exams. the overall effect was that the men still got more first degrees but has resulted in grade inflation. So if you have graduated the year before male or female you have had a slice of credibility taken off your degree.

it also goes to show how men are not wanted in university, they are out numbered 2 to 1 yet universities can only think up ways to take baseball bats to their male students. viva la feminism

Oxford University gives women more time to pass exams

Oxford University exam times were increased in a bid to improve the low scores of women, it has emerged.

Students taking maths and computer science examinations in the summer of 2017 were given an extra 15 minutes to complete their papers, after dons ruled that "female candidates might be more likely to be adversely affected by time pressure". There was no change to the length or difficulty of the questions.

It was the first time such steps had been taken. In previous years, the percentage of male students awarded first class degrees was double that of women and in 2016 the board of examiners suggested that the department make changes to improve women's grades.

Are you seriously saying that there are twice as many women in university as men, and also expect your OP to be taken seriously?

I think if Oxford really want to be concerned about equality, then perhaps they might explain how this chap became an authority on a cult that is rooted in sexist and homophobic mores.....and also it might perhaps show some gratitude to the women who have come forward with statements saying that he raped them......

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/07/oxford-university-places-tariq-ramadan-on-leave-amid-claims

Oxford University has agreed to place the Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan on a leave of absence after multiple allegations of rape, assault and sexual harassment were made against him.

“By mutual agreement, and with immediate effect, Tariq Ramadan, professor of contemporary Islamic studies, has taken a leave of absence from the University of Oxford,” the university said in a statement.

Ramadan, a senior research fellow of St Antony’s College, was last month accused of rape by the French author Henda Ayari, who said she was assaulted by Ramadan in a Paris hotel room in 2012.

Ayari named Ramadan in the wake of the sexual assault and harassment scandal involving Harvey Weinstein. She made a formal complaint to police in which she accused Ramadan of rape, violent assault and intimidation.

French newspapers reported last week that a woman had reported Ramadan to police over allegations that he raped and violently assaulted her in Lyon in 2009. And the Swiss paper La Tribune de Genève last weekend quoted four women who alleged Ramadan had sexually harrassed and had sexual relations with them in the 1980s and 1990s, when they were his teenage pupils while he was teaching in Switzerland.

If that had been published on April 1, I would have thought it was a joke. And even though the number of women earning first class degrees is still less than men, I feel sorry for these women, because their qualifications have an asterisk attached now.

Even though this is not April 1, I am coping with this by assuming it is a joke - and not a funny one.

Did only women get the extra 15 minutes? It sounds like everyone did.

Actually, it seems all students were given the extra 15 minutes to see if it would improve women's scores. Should have read the article more closely. Very misleading, if not dishonest, headline from the Telegraph.

See this is the problem with relying on Right Wing Tory Rags for information....

Where does it say 'female' students ONLY were given extra time?

OP reported, hopefully, the inaccurate and misleading thread title can be corrected to accurately reflect the story and not the OP's agenda, I won't be holding my breath though!

So they have a hypothesis that a cohort of students are adversely effected by the time pressure.
The purpose of the exam is not to test how students perform under time pressure.
So extend the time for the exam and evaluate how that cohort perform.

All very reasonable to me.

The exams were lengthened to help female candidates the Telegraph (which is not, unlike the Mail, a rag) did not say female students only.

come on, don't you mean unluckily? Wouldn't you have luvved it if it was just the girls that got the extra time? Wouldn't that support all your theories about the world gone mad, everything is stacked against you, and it's all just not fair?

Tomorrow's Telegraph will say "Black students given extra time". Monday will say "disabled students given extra time".

They can run this outrage factory all week.

The article heading in the newspaper is extremely misleading.

Don't fall for the Libtard data mining:

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/may/12/university-gender-gap-scandal-thinktank-men

For young men who get to university, previously unpublished data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) shows that 8% drop out of their studies, compared with 6% of women. HESA figures also show women outperforming men in terms of degree classification, with 73% of women getting a 2:1 or above, compared with 69% of men.
