The Irish Independent this morning reports that Fianna Fail are planning to run the Donegal South West byelection earlier next year by itself, and are hoping former Irish socceer star Packie Bonner will be the party's candidate.

Party strategists believe FF has a chance of winning in Donegal but have written off the other polls in Dublin South and Waterford, which have to be held by the end of April, as almost certain losses.
Politics.ie readers will remember discussions last year about Packie Bonner potentially running for the party in the European Elections in Ireland North West.

Why am I not surprised? Fianna Fail go for the name. Hope Packie Bonner tells 'em to shove it!

Will the electorate fall for it, probably.

Don't do it Packie. Let us remember you for your heroic exploits on the pitch. Don't let your good name be associated with that shower.

i dont know.

jesus christ himself could decend from heaven to stand for FF and he'd be told to ************************ off so i think packie would be mad to do so.

i reckon all three seats are lost to FF.

Is there not some talk also of the Cope's wife running .And is she not a sister of or a former POW (to use republican terminology) which would take some votes away from the other end of the former same coin - SF

Why would a man with the stature of Packie Bonner want to destroy his great Irishman image by associating with Fianna Fail. at this stage of his life.

Totally agree. Furthermore, How can FF think they can get away with just holding this by-election in Donegal and not the other two, they have not a hope in getting away with that, court case or not.

Bottom line is there will and has to be a general election at the latest after the "finance bill" in March, that will not pass, that is if they get the budget through...

The Donegal seat would be in safe hands if Bonner won the by election , but there would be a penalty and that is the total loss of respect for an Irish hero!

But if Bonner did run for Fianna Fail ;it must really say something about this political organisation as Bonner is respected as an honest decent gentleman. Why would he not support the likes of Fine Gael or Labour ?

Yet another ideal person for drafting and debating legislation. We fill our parliament with schoolteachers, celebrities and publicans and are surprised to find the country in a mess?

dont be shocked if FF win that by-election, or if the cope runs... donegal people, frankly, are electorally idiots. See coughlan and particularly McDaid.

They don't have a prayer in any of the three.

What's the thinking behind running it on a seperate date? It'll hardly inrease FFs chances

Dear God, Bonner for FF, Dunphy for FG and some hurler for SF. If name recognition is the only thing needed to get into the national parliament, then it's no wonder the country is in the state it's it.
