CAIRO:

Church bombing north of Egypt's capital kills 26

A bomb exploded in a church north of Cairo that was packed with Palm Sunday worshippers, killing at least 26 people and wounding 71 others, officials said.

The attack in the Nile Delta town of Tanta was the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt's Christian minority, which makes up around 10 percent of the population and has been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists. It comes just weeks before Pope Francis is due to visit the Arab world's most populous country.

CBC TV showed footage from inside the Mar Girgis church, where a large number of people gathered around what appeared to be lifeless, bloody bodies covered with papers. Regional Deputy Health Minister Mohammed Sharshar confirmed the toll.

ALEXANDRIA:

Two killed in suicide bombing outside Alexandria church - Egypt state TV | Reuters

A suicide bomber killed at least two people and injured 21 in front of a church in Alexandria, Egypt on Sunday, state television said.

The blast occurred hours after a bombing rocked a Coptic church in Tanta in Egypt's Nile Delta, killing at least 25 people and injuring 60.
30 or so killed, near 100 injured.

The Copts are the target of violence and discrimination since the 1970s and especially following the revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak 2011. And more recently have been blamed for ousting of Mohamed Morsi ..

Egypt’s Christians in the Shadow of the Muslim Brotherhood

Hopefully no more, but I fear their will be in the coming days, especially as it is the Christian Palm Sunday and then Holy week ..

Ibrahim's friends up to their old tricks.

Sisi's coup was 100% justified.

Shocking slaughter; this also happened to the Chaldeans in Iraq.

The West should be doing more to aid persecuted Christian refugees.

Update on numbers:

Bombings at Egyptian Coptic churches kill 36, injure more than 100 | Reuters

The first bombing, in Tanta, a Nile Delta city less than 100 kilometers outside Cairo, killed at least 25 and injured at least 78, Egypt's Ministry of Health said.

The second, carried out just a few hours later by a suicide bomber in Alexandria, hit the historic seat of the Coptic Pope, killing 11, including three police officers, and injuring 35, the ministry added.

Horrific. RIP

How is this going to end up - most/all of these ancient Christian communities hounded out of the Muslim-majority world?
In the meantime we're importing millions of Muslims here. It's a mad world.

I don't suppose US television pundits and war hawks will be demanding sanctions against the cpuntries that fund these terrorists, or the hate madrassas that are responsible for a gradual increase in extremism.

Anti Catholic brigade will be noticeable on this thread by their ignoring it.
I posted this from the CHRISTIAN frame of mind, not Catholic. I only mentioned palm sunday in the title due to the symbolism of it being the start of the Christian holy week & then these attacks

TBH I hope we dont have a Catholic Church bashing fest taking this thread off in an unrelated direction. Thats for elsewhere ..

Slaughter of the innocent, at their place of worship which compounds the callousness of this atrocity.

Christian communities in Syria, Iraq, have had untold casualties inflicted upon them by ISIS.

I've said it throughout this site that ISIS represent an existential threat.

I don't say this lightly - ISIS, every last one of them, needs to be eviscerated from the face of the Earth.

Condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. One consolation perhaps is that the martyred victims are with God now.

It mad when you realise that when Muslims here hit critical mass they will behave exactly like this...we're offering a hand of friendship to those who will ultimately want to usurp us by whatever means suits because, after all, the Koran leaves it pretty open.

Horrible. Saw images in the news today, they were unbearable.

I'd tend to agree that Christian and other minority refugees should perhaps get extra attention from international agencies, but I can't help feeling that the only "help" that can be readily provided will come down the remaining Middle Eastern Christians leaving the region.

Perhaps that's inevitable, but I think it's very sad.

Over a million have already left - its a huge diaspora. Unfortunately, they tend to be better-off, more skilled and have another language.

The poorest and most vulnerable will be left at the mercy of their "neighbours."

Killed by Muslims because they were Christians.

In the most cowardly and horrific manner.

The Copts are a small minority and are no threat whatsoever to the Muslim majority.

Evil barbaric sick bastards.

I'm sure the spokesman for the Clonskeagh mosque will be quick to condemn this latest atrocity, given their very close ties with Egypt.

Yeah.

The only thing of note I've read coming from eu central in the past few days is the threats to Hungary and Poland of the consequences for them of not taking in loads of middle-eastern and mostly muslim refugees.

They really do have all our best interests at heart.
