The FG TD for Galway East has announced that he will not be standing in the coming General Election. He has been a member of the Oireachtas since 1981. I assume this opens the door for Ciaran Cannon, however it will put a serious dent in FG's hopes for 3 seats here.

What is the likelihood of a few Fine Gael TDs who are retiring at the next election going missing around the time of key budgetary votes?

Another beacon of light bites the dust.

Who the FCK is Paul Connaughton?

A TD since 1981. 30 years and nobody noticed him.

He will be a sad loss, for sure. Just name the seat after him, the people of Galway East would be better represented by a chair anyway.

Probably the best of what East Galway had to offer.
What a sad indictment of the constituency and our political system. I live in Galway East. :(

Surely someone must have a kind word to say of him, to list his legislative and other achievements, for his forensic analysis in the Dail chamber and at committee and his role in shaping modern Ireland. Anyone?

I find it hard to believe that someone could be in LH for 30 years and made such little impact, but them until he was made leader, the same could be said for Enda Kenny.

Seems like Ciaran Cannon's defection to FG will pay off.

Successful Irish abroad can get country back on track- Connaughton - Galway Independent

You probably didn't notice him because his latter work was directed towards helping irish emigrants.
And nobody noticed this work because nobody cares about them.

Impoverished Irish peope abroad with no vote and no voice - its just not sexy, is it?

He caused a bit of a stir during the 1986 divorce refendum campaign when as a Minister of State he called for a No vote. Held his seat in the 1987 election in spite or possibly because of this.

That's what I'm thinking. The likes of Arthur Morgan and Paul Connaughton have no backlash to suffer if they vote for or abstain from the budgetary votes. The Budgets could still part without staining the opposition parties.

A few TDs might have to take an urgent phone call just before the budget night vote, (bit like what happened at GAA congress a few years ago).

Will he stop this charity work now that we are not paying him?

Thought that too. But, if FF frontbenchers go feral/independent how many will have to be locked in the Dail Jacks...

Will be macabre fun to watch...

No idea.

Congrats on a stupid question though. It bwas definitely better than saying nothing at all. Space had to be filled. The vacumn of your ignorance being shown up couldn't continue indefinitely.

Hence the above.

I suggest you email him for an answer. Or ring him. His home phone may be listed in the book.

Let us know how you get on.
