At a time of increasing censorship is this a form of digital book burning? The authors state "the effective banning of the sale of a book represents a dangerous new stage in the ongoing campaign to criminalize political expression and censor freedom of speech on the Internet".

The American payment-processing corporation PayPal has blocked sales of the World Socialist Web Site pamphlet, The Struggle Against Imperialism and for Workers’ Power in Iran.

Mehring Books customers who attempt to purchase the pamphlet using PayPal currently receive the following message: “PayPal gateway has rejected request. This transaction cannot be completed because it violates the PayPal User Agreement (#13122: Transaction refused).”

When a Mehring Books representative contacted PayPal’s customer service team on March 27 to inquire about the error, a PayPal representative confirmed that the pamphlet’s sale had been deliberately blocked because “the government has given us certain policies that we have to block transactions.”

The staff member’s supervisor stated further, “It is something where we can’t change it. You are not going to be allowed to process [sales of the book], based on compliance reasons.” She said she “can’t provide further information” and that Mehring Books would receive no explanation for the action “except via a subpoena.”

These statements make clear that PayPal is acting as an agent of the United States government to block the sale and distribution of a book. This is an illegal violation of the right to free speech and freedom of expression guaranteed in the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

Leaving aside the pamplet would bore most people to tears, this is very dangerous. This is illegal censorship.

What is specifically illegal about it? PayPal are under no obligation to service any or all transactions. They are a private corporation.

Please cite the law broken.

it might be good to get some leftist stuff banned, might make them see sense on their willingness to abandon free speech thus far.

Meh, Paypal ws fined 7.7 million dollars because they did not have adequate screening programmes in place to prevent illegal blackmarket transactions or the involvement of companies which were the subject of US sanctions.

They responded by panicking. The net is full of people whose payments for innocuous products were blocked or declined, and they all received the same message "Pending US regulations ..." Very puzzled people wondering why they werent able to buy childrens toys, for example.

Another private sector f*uck up.

Maybe it's not censorship if something is not sold for reasons of good taste?

I don't think he said a law was broken.

PayPal is a payment channel. Unless a book is explicitly banned who are they to refuse to allow you to buy it?

Imagine your credit card was declined in Hodges Figgis because a certain book was deemed thought crime.

PayPal don’t want the Fed or DOJ looking at them. If they’re told to do something they do it. So many holes in their system. So yeah: if there’s concerns that a book on Iran is going to folks in Iran then they’re going to roll over immediately.

And of course it’s not illegal. There needs to be a new amendment to punish people who don’t understand the first amendment.

And given the WSWS are the ones telling the story and getting that bit wrong, it does call into question the rest of the tale.

I have decided to avoid using PayPal and to stick with AIB Visa directly.

I recently had a transaction whereby the online order was completed but no notification came from PayPal and the site I was purchasing from didn't get any money.

Phoned PayPal (in Manila) and no solution offered. "We have technical Difficulties".

Recently too I purchased a flight from a major Airline using Paypal.
The Airline claimed they got no money and PayPal claimed they did. I never got reimbursed for the cost of the flight.

Money came out of my Paypal account but the Airline didn't complete the PO and issue a booking number.

The email was "payment pending" and then 24 hrs later e mailed advised transaction cancelled.

So I decided to just never use PayPal again.
They just get in the way.

A rather colourful comment from the comments section of wsws:

More and more it appears that the life of the world community is governed with scant respect for human rights, natural justice or simple fairness (much less the elementary liberty and safety of the individual) by a tiny, actively reactionary class of swindlers, warmongers, propagandists and torturers and their contemptible agents in the universities, the bureacracy, the media, and the services to the increasing dismay of every community. We have not seen politics this loathesome and sordid since the Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon. We are misruled by gangsters!

I've given up on them as well.

Which is a pity, as sometimes there are things on eBay that I might buy, if there was another payment option provided.

Google has been using algorithms to restrict access to left-wing web sites since last year.
