The Peace bridge appears to be a bridge to far for those who would drag us away from these glorious days of lurve and mutual community respect...

as we made our way in the gate we were greeted by sectarian chants – ‘Hun b******s, orange b******s’.

“At that point, a male ran out of the crowd with a pint bottle and threw it from about four foot into my face.”

The DUP in Londonderry says the incident is the latest in a series of sectarian attacks on the unionist community in the Waterside area of the city and plan to meet the PSNI on Monday to discuss what action should be taken.

"There is a sectarian gang coming and attacking houses and young Protestants, but despite a number of inter-agency meetings it has continued.

"We knew this was going to escalate into something more sinister and serious and it is obvious there are republican elements using the peace bridge to create an interface or to stamp some kind of authority in the Waterside."

Three boys thought they were going to be thrown from the Peace Bridge in Londonderry into the River Foyle during a vicious attack by a sectarian gang.

The victims, two aged 15 and the other 14, were making their way back home to the Waterside area of Derry when the gang of between 25 and 30 people identified them as Protestants.

WTF? The East bank of Derry now has plenty of nationalists so why would they need the bridge to be an interface????

Why your boys wanted to include Derry and Tyrone and a 30% nationalist minority in the founding of your state is completely unfathomable.

But you made your bed, you have to lie in it.

Fermanagh and Tyrone always had a large nationalist majority.

The creation of Northern Ireland was one big mistake......and so it continues...

There should have been a federal Ireland with a parliament in Dublin and Stormont and an upper house that bound the two together . The British couldn't be bothered and fooked it up again in Ireland . And it continues.....

The British mainlanders have shown themselves repeatedly as not equipped to deal with the internal machinations in Ireland....

You want to be friends with the Irish now? After four hundred years? What changed? I thought burning tricolours on bonfires, marching military style past their houses with fingers raised and just generally being bigoted and hateful towards your genial Irish hosts was all part of your typical Sunday worship routine.

Not one comment of condemnation so far, just the usual deflection and blame for others (Prods or Brits).

It's hard to take an orangeman seriously when talking about peace here, the OO opposed the Peace Process, often violently.

It's weird that this sectarian attack should happen at this time of year, like when Paul McCauley was kicked into a coma, only to die 5 years later, an incident that also occurred in the later days of July, carried out in Derry by a gang of young protestant males.
It's almost like the last few weeks of July there's a rise in sectarian tensions and consequently attacks.

As an orange man can you think of any reason why sectarian tensions would rise at this particular time of year?
And as an orange man, can you think of any way to decrease these tensions?

Derry has plenty of interfaces so why are Unionists trying to make up the peace Bridge is one?

They are calling for the Peace Bridge to be closed? Why? Trouble after the 12, I think the PSNI should know it would be occurring.

If you create a statlet on a sectarian head count it's not surprising sectarian problems occur.

It hasn't been a success . It doesn't help that the British governments take their eyes off the ball and it just turns into a sectarian quagmire....

It is not just nationalists or unionists. Both sides are doing that. No point blaming one or the other. Both are as bad as each other in Derry.

This is an issue of thuggery, which the police should be dealing with.

Yes, because you support the IRA, we know.
Why did ordinary Catholics take up arms and join the IRA against the Orange State in 1969?
You couldn't get a republican elected in West Belfast in the sixties.
