''The Communist Party of Ireland has launch a national campaign to have the peoples ownership of water guaranteed in the constitution.

Water is a human right, essential for life. It is not a commodity to be bought and sold. The European Union is demanding that the Government introduce charges for water, in order that it can be privatised as soon as it is profitable.

The only way to prevent this is to amend the Constitution of Ireland to guarantee the public ownership of water. We support the amendment being proposed by Right2Water, as follows:

“The Government shall be collectively responsible for the protection, management and maintenance of the public water system. The Government shall ensure that this resource remains in public ownership and management.”

If you would like to help in the campaign to distribute materials. We have leaflets, stickers etc drop us a line < cpoi@eircom.net > to find out more.''

Good idea, now all we need is a credible political body to introduce it. Now that the Communist party have introduced it, most normal people will think the idea is flawed.

Yes, they would want to get people to sign without telling them whose idea it was. Surprising that none of the other political parties thought to start the petition though.
Sorry Commies, I have signed it though.

If people can vote to put it in the Constitution, they can vote to remove it. You can't bind future generations. Isn't there already a provision in the legislaton for a plebiscite before IW can be sold? They can have both votes on the same day.

I'm in a Commie run Latin America country.
I pay a water bill every month.
In saying that, I oppose the EU interference in Irish affairs.
However, someone has to pay for it. And true socialism means that EVERYONE pays for it.
This is where Kommies posts confuses me.

Everyone does pay for it already.

Eh... treated water that is delivered to your house is.

If you wish to collect and use rain water for all your needs... go ahead.

If you want treated water delivered to your house... there are costs involved in providing this.

I'd agree with copper fastening whatever water utility emerges within public ownership.

The fairest way to charge for water however, is to charge based on usage above and beyond a reasonable allowance.

No it's not but the infrastructure required to treat and deliver it does need to be paid for. Water itself should be regarded as something that belongs to the people. Not to be traded in and sold for profit. Oil, sugar and wheat are commodities, water is not.

Let's have a competition for the best wording of such an amendment.
A pound to a penny it would be impossible, or at least totally impractical..

eh one of the most progressive income tax regimes in the world..we do pay for it. Anyone working pays for it.

If a worker paying income tax does not pay for it what are my taxes phucking well paying for then?
And isn't working well. Vast amounts lost through leaky pipes, untreated sewage pumped into rivers and streams. Where is the finance going to come from? By making people who use it pay for it. Of course in the commie lala land of the bird brained OP this is not on. Someone has to pay...........just not him and his scroungy mates.

O

Oscurito

I see this as a separate issue to water charges but I have signed it and I'm about to share it on Facebook.

There are fadas in my first name and surname but I had to remove them in order to sign. :|

We already pay the problem is where the monies is spent. We pay more than enough into the black hole of the Irish exchequer

The problem lies on our spending.

20 billion on welfare
16 to 18 billion on public sector pay and pensions...

20 years ago my tax paid for bin collection, water, education, I could claim back on doctor and dental work and I could live in my house after paying a shed load on stamp duty.

All of a sudden 20 years on I am paying more in income tax and I have to pay a sh1t load of stealth taxes
property tax, USC, Carbon tax to name but a few and now I get less bang for my buck, I also have to pay for my bins to be collected, I also have to pay all my medical bills as well.

In that 20 years the 2 areas above (welfare and ps pay and pensions) have spiraled out of control

The spot light should not be on trying to rape the tax payer again but getting a hold of spending and sorting that side out. If those 2 areas were reformed there would be more than enough to pay for water and then some

"Water is a human right, essential for life." So is food and it's privatised. The OP makes no sense.
