BBC News - Officers disciplined over Stoneyford response

Following an invetigation by the Polce Ombudsman four PSNI officers have been disciplined for failing to properly investigate instances of sectarian intimidation in Stoneyford, a small settlement in the hills above Belfast. For years a vicious campaign of harrassment has been mounted against Catholic residents, a number of whom have been forced to leave their homes in the village. Prior to the intervention of the Police Ombudmans's office no-one had ever been convicted in relation to any of the attacks. The man believed primarily responsible for the loyalist campaign is currently in prison on other serious charges.

The intimidation in Stoneyford has been serious and sustained. The police failure to act agasint those reponsible, even when presented with compelling evidence by a BBC film crew, was utterly shameful. It is right that these officers should be disciplined, though perhaps more appropriate that they be dismissed.

However, no officers have been disciplined in relation to a complaint made in 2008, as had been previously thought.

That complaint related to an incident in which Sinn Fein assembly member Paul Butler was attacked in the village.

Prosecutors had to drop charges after police sent the file to the wrong place.
You'd certainly think whoever was involved in sending the file would have had their position terminated.

I wish you well with this thread Picador,it will like many other NIs take on a life of its own,the fact that the officers have been dicsciplined is a welcome sign.

The evidence is incontrovertible. Much of it has been documented for years. I have used temperate language to report on the disciplining of these officers and I see no reason why others poster should not do the same.

Pic, what happened in Stoneyford has been not given the media coverage it warrents and it highlights the pathetic NI political journalists who will not push unionist politicians to comment or condemn such sectarianism, we all know that they will not come out forthright and condemn such incidents (for obvious reasons) but they should be challenged in the media to state their position regarding such disgraceful actions perpetrated by the bigots who vote for them.

What's disturbing is the connections of this gang to local unionist politicians - as well as the police inaction. Deeply sinister!

In fairness to BBC Spotlight did a good job of highlighting the issue a couple of years ago by showing how blatant some of the intimidation was. The only loyalists convicted were those who attacked the film crew. Looking forward to the alleged gang leader's trial on certain other matters!

Pic, you can see why the unionists do not want any more enquiries, Stoneyford warrents one and SF imo should push the British to start one.

A sickening example of Loyalist Ethnic cleansing. As for the role the PSNI played, It reinforces my view that it is a bigoted one sided entity.

Interesting now to see what this sites resident Bigot's have to say in response, or will their silence be deafening.

Read the OP. The Police Ombudsman's Office has conducted an inquiry.

A totally unconstructive post.

"We want an inquiry!!"

"Ok"

"Well hurry!!"

"Ok, we've arrested, charged and imprisoned the man we think is responsible, we've disciplined the officers who let you down and we've changed our procedures to make sure it doesn't happen again. We're very sorry, this was clearly unacceptable."

"Not good enough! You're all bigots! We want an inquiry!!"

All sectarianism is to be condemned.

Condemnation from unionist politicians in the media?

Took me 2 seconds to find this from Jeffrey Donaldson in the media .....

Speaking from China, where he is participating in a trade mission, the MP said he condemned the threats made against the family and added it was 'totally wrong' anyone in the village should feel or be threatened because of their religion or political outlook.

"In the new Northern Ireland we are trying to create there is no place for such sectarianism," he continued and added he would work with both the police and the local community to ensure the situation did not develop and create further divisions within the village.

That's "sweep it under the carpet" revisionism if ever I seen it.

im hardly 'sweeping it under the carpet'...

im just not accepting hysterical inflammatory nonsense that just fuels the fire...

the acts carried out are bad enough and need no further [ridiculous] emphasise to describe them...

If you want to see what ethnic cleansing really looks like visit Bosnia-Hercegovina. The term is not appropriate in an NI context./
