It turns out that County Mayo, home of Ireland's Taoiseach, has revered connections with Argentina.

Admiral William Brown (buried in Buenos Aires) who hailed from Foxford, Co. Mayo is considered the Father of the Argentinian Navy, which rebuffed European advances against its sovereignty.

Will the Taoiseach rebuff the secular advances of Gilmore in the interests of 'The Gathering' and reopen the Vatican Embassy given the Argentinian connections with Ireland?

That is as tenuous a link as my link with Zimbabwe on the grounds that Robert Mugabe is also a Catholic...

My favourite Irish South American was Daniel O'Leary, who was born and brought up around the corner from my old house in Cork (he was born at the top of Barrack Street, I lived at The Lough) and is a national hero of Venezuela buried at their Pantheon...

Surely, the most famous of all Latin Americans of Irish descent is Argentinian, Ernesto Che Guevara (the modern Bolivar)! He had mainly Cork links, but was also related to the richest of all Galway merchant tribes - The Lynchs! Indeed his daughter visited my city a few years ago.
Also, the Cuban government offered to pay for a modern sculpture of him to be placed here, which received strong support from the wonderful Councillor, Willy Cameron (a rare thing - a true and genuine socialist in the Irish Labour party!, who has also been cruelly denied the mayoral chain due to a true redneck pact between FF and FG here!). It was shot down by the redneck set on the absurd grounds that it might adversely affect Yanquis investment in the city!:mad:

Wouldn't really consider it a connection, I was waiting for you to tell me that he was his great great grandson or something.

For a small country like us, it is amazing the impact (both good and bad) our emigrants had in such far flung places.
The South America connection is especially incredible and interesting.

Yes but Guevara (Lynch) was a sociopathic murderer, so I wouldn't be so anxious to claim him...

I will remind you of that when the new Pope comes to visit Ireland, and specifically the home of Admiral William Brown in the Taoiseach's constituency of County Mayo.....

Guess who will want to charge his Nokia when that happens.

Woz he?
In comparisson to the Yankee sponsored death squads and torture units which included the use of rodents and trained alsation dogs to rape women prisoners during Pinochet's takeover in Chile, the throwing of prisoners out of helicopters and the Naziesque presenting to loyal subjects of the new born offspring of female prisoners who had been raped in torture chambers and subsequently on giving birth murdered, which happened in Argentina under Vidella's watch, I'd say Che and his fellow revolutionaries were living saints!

I'm not a relativist. The death squads in El Salvador and Nicaragua, the fascists of Pinochet's Chile, the fascists of Argentina's junta - all the scum of the earth (my avatar is of one of the victims of the CIA-sponsored El Salvador death squads). Doesn't stop me from condemning Guevara's bloodlust and ability to murder people without a second thought. Those who live by the sword...

But it's not some hastily cobbled together link like the Obama/Moneygall or Reagan/Ballyporeen six-degrees-of-separation connection.

Argentinian dignitaries have been visiting Foxford for decades now....

When Labour members can muster up the courage and foresight to take their Party back from the malign influence of the DL dregs there will be a turnaround on the embassy closure. Closing the emassy was the result of a personal agenda by Gilmore, nothing else.

When he's been removed the decision will be reversed.

That's not a Vatican link with Co. Mayo. It's an Argentine link with Co Mayo.
Pope Benedict snubbed Mr Kenny last season. I wouldn't blame him. Kenny was way out of diplomatic line with his yahoo speech.
Make yahoo speeches if you want, but don't expect papal audience afterwards.
