Gary Aitkenhead, chief executive of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) at Porton Down, told Sky News: "We were able to identify it as novichok, to identify that it was military-grade nerve agent.

"We have not identified the precise source, but we have provided the scientific info to government who have then used a number of other sources to piece together the conclusions you have come to."

This deserves its own thread.

Ireland has expelled a Russian Diplomat on the basis of no evidence on the assertions of essentially a NATO member and a NATO policy of harassing Russia. Absolutely shameful.

In Russia, Ireland is regarded as being de facto members of NATO.

Theresa May and Boris Johnson are lying and our Government's actions are in solidarity with a lie.

Update:
Former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan explains Novichok is "of a type" made 20 years ago in Uzbekistan NOT Russia. Any former Soviet Country could have possessed the knowledge to have synthesised this nerve agent. All the know how to make it went to the USA as they dismantled the Uzbek factory in 1999.

It was never going to be proven... which is why it's been such a dodgy move...

There have been plenty of events previously - Crimea, Ukraine, Litvinenko, Syria etc. where the stance adopted in the wake of this would have been on much more solid ground...

The facts should be established before politicians try to apportion blame.

How many times does this need to be reiterated?

Pootin needed a message to be sent long before Salisbury.

It's just a pity Salisbury was chosen as the event that triggered the message.

Oh Dear, not to worry I'm sure Theresa and Boris anticipated this and will have lots of concrete evidence to back up their accusations, right?.....

Facts are irrelevant little irritants when it comes to swaying public opinion. Remember Sadam's WMDs, that he actually didn't have?

I posted this already on the other thread:
Seems like the big countries bump off people who are inconvenient.
There's the Pat Finucane case whose assassins past through two police check-points to drive up to his house, and drove back through these checkpoints to get away. Part of the Good Friday agreement involved some clause dealing with an investigation into this... but the Brits found a different interpretation of this three or four years back to the disappointment of Enda Kenny.

Just from memory -- do a google on it. Some Northern Irish bloke called Lennon back in the early seventies was going around the Soho bars in London saying that the British services were going to kill him. Some soft-hearted, concerned English commedian took him to the council for civil liberties or some such NGO where they recorded his name, address, who he thought was going to kill him and then stored his file. Three days later his body was found shot. ...
Caused a bit of a stir due to having made this visit. Of course the provies or paramilitaries were given the blame by official sources.
Then there was Rosemary Nelson, another defense lawyer who was shot.

The only differences that I see is that if the Rooskies were involved in this Skripal attack, they were operating outside their jurisdiction... and using nerve agent is kind of a no-no... Geneva convention etc.
A shame things have escalated.
Is this worth fighting world war 3 over? I'd look and try to find a better reason :-(

He heads the government of a supposed neutral country , and he took the decision (and hogged the media limelight as if to prove it was his decision) to ignore our neutrality and support the UK and EU on utterly flimsy evidence, in fact no evidence at all ...further proving he is singularly unqualified to be Taoiseach....far more than blah blah blah to anyone but fanatical Blueshirts like yourself

Apparently, he jumped on the explusion bandwagon at the behest of Macron, maybo toget him to leave irleand alone about being a tax haven for MNCs. Ideologically, they are really similar: both neo liberal scumbags.

Yep... although I never bought for a second the BS about him being able to strike at Blighty...

Saddam did have WMDs in the past though... which we know because he used them on his own people in Hallabja.

Dear Gerhardt,
Let's just assume for one moment that the Brits have a smoking gun, ... that for instance that Putin's estranged wife of granny or head of the KGB is a double agent...
The Brits can hardly call them as a witness to coroberate their version of events. The witness would be bumped off as a traitor pronto.

All we have is the balance of likelihoods.

In the closed and closetted world of espionage it's conceivable that some of Skripals old KGB pals chanced on where he was holing out and may have operated on a freelance basis.... without Putin's knowledge...
Or then the rooskies may just be trying to see how far plausible deniability will get them.
