I like this, good man Michael D;

Teach philosophy to heal our

...the President expressed concern about an “an anti-intellectualism that has fed a populism among the insecure and the excluded”. “The teaching of philosophy is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal to empower children into acting as free and responsible subjects in an ever more complex, interconnected and uncertain world,” Mr Higgins said.

“A new politics of fear, resentment and prejudice against those who are not ‘like us’ requires the capacity to critique, which an early exposure to the themes and methods of philosophy can bring.”

I'm guessing he means Trumpismo and the cult of "truthiness". If debating can be polite, then the need for laws on political correctness falls away.

But but but, wasn't our whole messy process in 1918-23 a direct result of feeding: "..a populism among the insecure and the excluded"?? That messy process also resulted, however, in his current happy occupation of the Aras. Just thinking philosophically of course.....

Funny, teachers are useless but whenever a new fad comes along, it should be part of the school curiculum.

MDH was appointed to Senate in 1973 by probably most right wing government in state. One that sent journalists to prison.

MDH consistently voted for Labour to be in coalition every chance he had, was given minor ministerial sinecures, was elected President.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn he is not....

Young people, especially girls are more interested in the kardashians and celebrity. Look at the gender breakdown on this site, girls never talk politics ! Attempts to create an Ireland where young people sit down and discuss philosophy are ridiculous.

While a small amount of boys have the intelligence to debate, think, create - the vast majority will still prefer to talk football , Carmen Hayes (porn) or cars.

Well I believe firmly that there should be compulsory classes in Plato and Aristotle. However such or at any rate serious philosophy wont happen as things are because they would achieve the opposite effect to what the President thinks they would, they would make people more likely to rebel against the current system and not conform to it- as the Ruling Elite are probably very much aware.

So long as you're baptised of course.

Philosophy is a new fad!

Who knew?

Did anyone tell Diogenes the cynic?
Did the Greeks a lot of good when the Macedonians arrived.

OK so let's start with critical thinking at inter, and philosophy at leaving cert?

Plenty of room for a much fuller analysis of porn, the kardashians, cars/tanks and celebs if you can think critically.

The President is an atheist- anyone who has looked seriously into philosophy cannot subscribe to atheism. Physican heal thyself.
