good idea? bad idea? don't poke the bear comes to mind. for an entity that was supposedly set up so that European countries wouldn't go to war with each other , letting the Ukraine in seems to be heading down a road of picking a fight with countries outside of Europe namely Russia.

Ukraine will join EU within 10 years: PM | News , World | THE DAILY STAR

BERLIN: Ukraine will join the EU within the next decade, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said Friday, adding that his country still believed strongly in the bloc despite Britain's vote to leave.

Groysman told Germany's Funke media group that Ukraine saw its future in the West and hailed an association agreement with the EU as a "driving force" behind reforms in Kiev.

"I am convinced that Ukraine will be in the EU in 10 years," he said.

Simply not possible.

Even were it possible the EU is unlikely to be in existence in 10 years.

I agree.

The EU has morphed into an imperialist project, led by people who are 'gifted' when it comes to building empires in bureaucracies and scheming on dusty corridors but certainly not in trying to recreate their lost empires of their youth.

This illustrates why the EU matters to Eastern Europe. As Trumpian, isolationist policies get more of a hearing stateside, Putin will look for opportunities to expand his influence.

Wasn't Putin who started the mess in Ukraine.

Who will pension ponzi scheme going otherwise?
We've the same population in Ireland as the 1700s. As things go we're doing ok.

The problem with importing foreigners to pay taxes to look after our doddering old folk is....
1. Not all of them have a work ethic. Many are a drain on taxes already.
2. Migrants get old too. When they do, whats Plan B? Trawl Africa to get even cheaper labour to look after the elderly immigrants?

The population may be similar but the demographics are drastically changing. that is the issue.

As I said it is a ponzi scheme but unless there is a seismic shift this is what we have. We need that cheap labour for the elderly(we'll all be there eventually). The rush for Africa has started already.

We always had elderly people.
In fact post WW2, we had a real shortage of young people due to millions of them dying and all that.
How did we tackle it back then??
I don't buy this myth at all, that we need foreigners to look after us in the future.
Christ, entice our own to come back from Australia and the US if there really is a problem.

Be that as it may, he is a clear threat to Eastern Europe.
That is American inspired NATO nonsense.

The USA has a vested interest in fomenting trouble in Europe and keeping it at loggerheads with Russia.

That is American stategic policy unchanged since 1945.

Not as many elderly compared to working as we have now. They won't come back from Oz and the states to work for the wages we can offer. Oz and the states have the same issue by the way.
