"A Brexit official in the Business Department also suggested in the message that Amazon reviews could replace the “CE European standards mark” in the eyes of online shoppers. The revelations immediately sparked concerns that the system for ensuring the safety of electrical equipment, toys, machinery, medical devices and other products could be watered down after Britain quits the EU."

They've lost their frickn minds.

Well, as Darwin understood, the stupid among us will go to an early grave and not pass down their stupid gene.

Absolutely. By those first people testing products and dying/being horrifically injured subsequent consumers won't buy the product thus causing an economic equilibrium to occur.
Who needs standards when the market will self regulate. Ok a few people will die/be horrifically injured but the savings will be passed on to the consumer.

Progress!

And of course, the government should keep out of regulating Amazon review comments - companies should be able to pay to have unfavourable messages deleted.

Pure ignorance on your part.

The British have their own standards institution established in 1901 that covers the above items and more .
It predates anything in the EU and is in many respects superior.

couldn't they just work off a couple of other countries, if they approve them the UK approves them and just deal with the exceptions if there is a conflict. Say EU, US , Canada and Australia.
