The proposal from the Dublin City Business Association would effectively ban sex shops from most areas of the city centre :

Business body seeks to gentrify district by ban on sex shops, tattooists and tanning salons - The Irish Times - Tue, Nov 27, 2012
Sex shops should be banned within 500m of a place of worship or educational institution, the report says. “This measure is based on one introduced in New York City by Mayor Rudy Giuliani and successfully dealt with this particular land use issue,” the report says.

Do posters agree ? Are sex shops that different ?

Banning sex shops from churches and schools?

Sounds like a good plan.

Not having been in Dublin for several years, I didn't realise proliferation of sex shops was such a problem.

Is it?

It's not a problem at all and I don't see why they are objecting.

How many churches and schools are in the South William Street area? Been a while and I have to admit neither would have been registering very highly on my radar :)

There is a formal church nearby on Clarendon St, also there's a school of music. Aside from that there are quite a few evangelical Christian and Muslim places of worship dotted around the city centre...let alone the language schools etc

I can understand the logic of keeping them away from schools. But churches? What are they afraid of?? That's the Flock will turn to blow up sheep?

If the sex shop was there first should the school/church not be the one to move?

for god sake will the "Ban It" brigade ever stop
Most sex shops in Dublin are around the city center
Two or three on capel street and another couple on South Williams St

They are all tame with regard window displays compared to other EU states.

They were waffling a while ago abut banning phone sex lines adverts (also very tame) an my favorite stopping people accessing porn online

No, it's not. To hear some people going on you'd know they never heard tell of Amsterdam. I prefer having sex well and truly out in the open, even all inclusive street orgies (weather permitting). God knows the church knows all about sex. I've a better proposal...we should be moving schools 500m away from the churches.

Fair enough, I think we are and will be ultra conservative on all things sexual for some time to come in this country, bit snobbish though, creating an area that has no

* Adult shops, fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, discount shops, tattoo parlours, tanning salons, casinos, lap-dancing clubs, phone shops and bookmakers should not be allowed.
One wonders if one can really create an upmarket area by shoving out what is considered downmarket.

Given the Catholic Church's recent history with children, will this ban be followed by a ban on churches within 500m of schools?

The patrons of sex shops should not have to put up with the sight of churches.

In the centre of Dublin there is a ghastly house of ill repute where grown men and women from the four corners of this island come to demean and debase themselves lower than any bukkake covered Japanese pornstar.

It's better known as Dáil Éireann
