What does this paragraph describe?:

'[It] introduces the free movement of goods, capital, services and people and provides for common policies in macroeconomic sphere, transport, industry and agriculture, energy, foreign trade and investment, customs, technical regulation, competition and antitrust regulation.

Provisions for a single currency and greater integration are envisioned in future. The union operates through supranational and intergovernmental institutions.

The ... "Supreme Body" of the Union, consisting of the Heads of the Member States. The second level of intergovernmental institutions is represented by the ... Intergovernmental Council (consisting of the Prime Ministers of member states).

The day-to-day work ... is done through the Eurasian Economic Commission (the executive body), which is a supranational body similar to European Commission.

There is also a judicial body – .... .'

This is a paragraph describing the EAEU, the Eurasian Economic Union, comprising of most of the countries of the old Soviet Union, without Ukraine and the Baltic States. There is a definite resemblance to the EU, in fact it is a carbon copy, though economically much smaller.

This may be another version of Putin's Soviet Union Lite, but it does show the the basic ideas of Economic Unions are "a good idea". In fact, without a globalised world with an expanding need for energy, it is hard to see what possible useful role Russia could play. The suspicion is that Russia sees the EAEU as a new geopolitical sphere to expand into or consolidate. And it does show that making Putin head of the world's Anti-Globalisation forces is a complete nonsense.

Putin has even talked about a future EU-EAEU linkup of some sorts, but it is also clear he sees the EU as a geopolitical rival to his ambitions, and will weaken it as much as possible. Ukraine spuring the union of oligarchs and kelptocrats in favour of the democratic EU was an unforgivable insult.

After Brexit, will Prime Minister Boris Johnson be flying to Moscow for a "free trade deal" with Putin's EAEU? You bet. But let us hear no more about regulated (or "free") multilateral trade being somehow outmoded, with a preference for protectionism . That is turning the clock back to the 1930s, and even the ones already politically back in the 1930s do not want that.

Vladimir Putin on European Integration:

'An economically sound and balanced partnership between the Eurasian Union and EU can change the geopolitical and geo- economic situation of the entire continent and have a positive impact globally."

"It took the Europeans 40 years to get from the European coal and steel community to the fully fledged European Union. The formation of the [Eurasian] Unified Economic Space and Customs Union is proceeding much more dynamically because it is learning from the experience of the EU and other regional organisations."

"Membership in the Eurasian Union, apart from direct economic benefits, will enable its members to integrate into Europe faster and from a much stronger position."

What's not to like there? A vision of a continent united, from Lisbon to Vladivostok. All the Putinistas can emigrate to St Petersburg to live in their idyllic country.

Thanks, Torygraph!

...plus Georgia, Azerbaijan, and two of the 'stans which I can't spell. Putin will be gunning for those, politically speaking. I suspect his real aim is to keep more than an eye on China's growing influence to Russia's south, new silk road and all that.

For now, when he is done, bread queues will once again be prevalent across the USSR.

Looks great. Ireland should join it. We should certainly offer Russia a naval base here.

Possibly, but Putin made an agreement with China with great fanfare after the US and EU introduced sanctions against Russia.

However, its results have been disappointing for Russia, not going in any way to replace the exports lost to the embargoes placed on its gas and oil.

The Chinese do not rate Putin highly, do not fear him, and treat Russia with the disrespect the Chinese have displayed towards that country since the Sino-Soviet split. Indeed, China could seize swathes of Siberia using the same justification Putin used to invade Ukraine.

"China won Putin's war in Ukraine" according to Timothy Snyder. If anything, President Xi sees Putin as a client, and a pawn in his game.

To paraphrase EU language, "an area of Un-Freedom, Injustice and insecurity".

As for businesses. Of course unless they are oligarchs they are insecure, because they saw what happened to VKontakte, which was taken from Pavel Durov and handed to Putin crony Alisher Usmanov.

Can anything that Russia does be taken serious? What's the figure for the deaths of journalists in that country in the last decade or so-52 or some such thing. They can't even stop themselves from drugging their athletes even when the whole world knows they're doing it. The EU would need to sup with a long spoon and look for partnerships with the free world regions,

15 - 4 = 11, and two other former Soviet Rupublics are formally or informally aligned with the EAEU. From Wikipedia:

  • Tajikistan was formally invited to join the union and has expressed its interest in acceding..... but has not joined yet.
  • Uzbekistan remains hesitant to join the Economic Union, with Uzbek officials making opposing claims on the prospect of integration.... Uzbekistan joined the CIS Free Trade Area in 2014, meaning it has free trade with EAEU member states.
  • However, break-away regions of Moldova (Transnistria),[102] Ukraine (Donetsk and Luhansk)[103] and Georgia (South Ossetia and Abkhazia)[104] have expressed a desire to join the Eurasian Customs Union and integrate into the Eurasian Economic Union.

Membership of the EAEU is a big deal with Putin. But ...

'Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia have been offered by both the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union to join their integration unions. All three countries opted for the European Union by signing association agreements on 21 March 2014.'

Is oceana still at war with eurasia?
Last time I looked, we were threatening "fire and fury" at an Eastasian country, but that seems to have flipped overnight, and some Muslim crowd in the Middle East are the current villains du jour (and not for the first time).

The "axis of evil" has developed what the physicists would call a "precessive wobble".

All you need to know about the Kremlin's pet project of #EEU, Eurasian Economic Union: #Russia would not be opening its market fully to dairy products from #Belarus. The EEU was supposed to be a free #trade block for its members, but it is not:"
