A good servant of the country and modernising force for peace. Involved in that entire financial quagmire that FF wallowed in during the 80s, but that shouldn't cause people to overlook his achievements.

What are you on about. He joined FF late, was a socialist millionaire, and facilitated that chancer Harold Wilson's meeting with IRA under false pretext during visit to Dublin. He did end up in FF and was minister for Health for short period in early 1990s. He promised FF would legislate for X case and SC judgment after referendum of 1992 failed.

Yeah, you would think that he would have sorted out that whole abortion thing between the time of the referendum and the time he retired due to ill health a few months later...

He promised FF would, does it all depend on one man ?

Which aimed to bring about a ceasefire, in a time when talking to the IRA wasn't seen as cool for a British PM. What's your problem with that bit?

.........The frigging referendum was held in November and he quit office 3 months later due to illness. But you think it's HIS fault it didn't happen? Not the people who held office in the proceeding 20 years who didn't follow up on his commitment? He was in the office for a year and brought in contraception and dragged the country into the 20th century.

Had no idea he was still alive, he was in bad health 20 years ago. I always thought he summed up much of the Labour Party - an independent clientilist who needed a political tag cf Penrose, John Ryan, Moynihan, John Kelly, ad infinitum. Heard him on TV once refusing to oblige Lab by standing for MEP as he 'had a pathological fear of flying'. Easily switched to FF of course, having made his fortune selling the Medical Times or whatever it was called. He had one major achievement as Health Minister - he dragged the family planning laws into the late woth century, replacing Haughey's contemptible 'Irish solution'.

He did clarify that he was actually having a go at FF, not John O'Connell.

Why he is having a general go at FF on an RIP thread seems a bit strange to me, its not like there's a shortage of abortion threads.

Research might show you that at that meeting in Dublin, Wilson was leader of Opposition ! So when a minister for health promises something, it all depends on how long he is in office, even though his government and party continues in office?

By the way O Connell was a conduit for moving money between Haughey and Fastouk one way traffic of course.

Actually it was Barry Desmond who replaced Haughey's Irish solution to Irish problem as minister for Health in mid eighties, - to the implacable opposition of Haughey , FF and Catholic Church. Bishop Newman nof Limerick warned FG/Lab Tds about loss of their immortal souls. It was at that time that Des O Malley made his "Stand by the Republic" speech, which led to his expulsion from FF, and founding of PDs.
