Rape and murder threats, n____r and b___h: Diane Abbott on online abuse.

O

Oscurito

Labour's opposition home secretary, Diane Abbott was interviewed on Sky News this morning. In the week after a text message from David David about her was published in which he said he wouldn't hug her because he's "not blind", the interview touched on the rising crescendo of online abuse of politicians.

The news channel displayed some of the messages she's received pointing out that these were some of the milder ones - others were too disgusting to ever be broadcast. The wording of these were:
  • ugly, fat black b___h
  • get yourself spat at by someone with HIV and die a quick death
  • Piece of pond slime who should be hung

The potential for abuse was always there but she makes the point that 20 years ago, someone would have needed to put pen to paper and post the abusive messages. Now they can reach the object of their hatred with the click of a button.

Women politicians and especially women politicians from minority ethnic backgrounds clearly do attract a lot of this abuse and alongside the fact that it's genuinely worrying for anyone to be subjected to this, there is also the danger that politics will once again become dominated by white males because others will be put off by the likelihood of being abused and threatened.

She gets abuse because she is a far left extremists. All she has to do is block users who abuse her.

t the same time, there was little reaction to a report contradicting the narrative that male public figures get considerably less Twitter abuse than their female counterparts. While the study, conducted by the British think tank Demos, was limited to a fairly small sample of British celebrities, journalists and politicians whose Twitter timelines were tracked over a two-week period, its findings are nonetheless interesting. On the whole, 2.5 percent of the tweets sent to the men but fewer than 1 percent of those sent to women were classified as abusive. Male politicians fared especially badly, receiving more than six times as much abuse as female politicians.

She's perfectly entitled to pursue her brand of policitics and was given a mandate to do so.

Was Jo Cox a far left extremist?

It's actually quite hard to stop someone on Twitter from tweeting you. You can stop them from seeing your tweets but they can still tweet you.

Even if you do succeed in blocking them, they can just open a new account.

She sure is. But if you are in the public eye expect abuse. Goes with the territory. Life is not a box of chocolates.

Isn't it great the way Google will tell you what you want to hear? If you just enter the right search key?

What is n*****? It would help if there was more plain speaking and less PC crap and Lingofacism in our everyday lives.

I don't think it's quite that simple. She may block users but she may still receive insulting and degrading, disturbing messages.
We live, thankfully, in the western world where freedom of expression is celebrated.

Just because we don't agree with someone's opinion does not mean that we should be facilitated to send vile messages in an effort to suppress or worse, wipe out the person, inciting hatred and violence for their views and as Des Q., pointed out Abbot was democratically elected by people in her constituency.

Incidences of it elsewhere are not an excuse for it at all.
its reason to "man up" though and take the high road instead of playing the victim card.

What she should do is just pretend that the abuse is a diet sheet. That way she is sure to ignore it.

Politics will suffer if this issue is not addressed. Perfectly capable people who would be good politicians will choose some other career and if we're left with inferior politicians to rule us and pass laws, countries will suffer.

Absolutely disgusting. Diane Abbott is one of the few current UK politicians of any charm and genuine intelligence.

I don't condone the use of violent or abusive language. However it is now standard on social media so if you are elected to public office you need top accept that there are idiots out there who will hurl abuse in your direction. This is a problem more so for men than women black and white but Abbott has been using these tweets to illicit sympathy and advance her own agenda.
