Barrister earns €620,000 for refugee appeal work - National News - Independent.ie

New figures provided by Justice Minister Alan Shatter confirm that Michelle O'Gorman received €623,862 for work on the tribunal between 2008 and last year.

One of the other top earners is former Foreign Affairs Minister David Andrews, who is a senior counsel. He received €260,363

The figures show that last year, barristers received an aggregate €324,395

Is this crazy money WE pay these people
Should there be a set wage for these people, say 100,000 per year

Read the article.

Her average fee is a mid-ranking three figure sum.
She provided services in just under one and a half thousand cases in the past five years.
The fee quoted is an aggregated sum over those five years, in which she acted in over a thosand cases.

The current figure is not much greater than a quarter of a million euros.

There is nothing startling, nor worrying in the article.

Remember during one of the tribunals when it emerged that these barristers were being overpaid by E250 per day.

What happened? Did the tribunal see to it that the taxpayer was reimbursed.

Did he fvck, they were told to keep it, sher the plebs will only raise an eyebrow

An arbitrary cap? No. Not at all.

The fees being quoted are not extraordinary, and for each individual case the average was a three figure sum.

Please justify to me, what a single case is worth, and what sort of a cap would be appropriate.

Please state you cap, in the context of the work done for each case before the Tribunal.

why do you we a process where all these legal people are involved
barristers, lawyers etc
what is wrong with taking this out of the hands of the legal profession.
so they stop milking the state (YOU).

if there was one team of legal people, paid a normal wage looking after immigration,
where they made the decisions
instead of tons of barristers and lawyers making a killing on the state (YOU)
appealing and then appealing and appealing again and we pay the costs
crazy stuff

And people doubt there's a virulent pro-immigration lobby in this country?
... who don't particularly care who's paying either.

Why the heck should there be free legal aid for any old Tom, Dick or Harry who swans into this Country anyway?

While they and landlords and employers are the biggest winners, I don't think lawyers are anywhere near the front line when ORAC say no, which is most of the cases. The asylum seeker and him alone decides to appeal. It is only when notice to appeal is lodge , when the lawyer steps in.

Like it or not, each applicant is entitled to an appeal, and the lawyers, whether representing the person or ORAC, or are the decision makers are entitled to some payment for their work (lot of money though, is hardly justified)
what sort of cods wallop is that
I know we are a very tick stupid people but come on
do you actually think we believe the mr refugee with little or no english or understanding of the law
decides to appeal or not

we are a very ignorant people
we deserve what we get in this country
when will we wake up to these lawyers

it is a system set up to fill Lawyers pockets with money
and like all other things the truth will come out about this scam too

a far cheaper just as efficient system could be set up
but no, the legal profession gives advice to the stupid civil servants on how to set it up
and bingo, a new cash machine
