A report on the putative "causes" of sexual abuse in the American Catholic Church over the past 60 years is set to be released today. The study, titled "The Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests in the United States, 1950-2010," claims celibacy and homosexuality were not prime catalysts for mistreatment

If pedophilia, homosexuality, and celibacy aren't to blame, what or who is?

Apparently many priests were unable to deal with the pressures of the "sexual revolution of the 60s."

I know this report is based on a study in the USA but it would come as a big surprise to Peter Tyrrell, a former resident of Letterfrack industrial school (1924-32), and who committed suicide by setting fire to himself on Hampstead Heath in 1967! During Peter's sojourn in Letterfrack he was subject to, and witnessed clergy who were "unable to deal with the pressures of the sexual revolution."

In the Institutions sexual violence was just one of the tools used to dominate us along with starvation, denigration, hard physical labour, extreme physical and psychological conditions, fear, religion......

How does that explain the paedophilia that went on since the 4th century ? Was there a sexual revolution back then?

Yeah, Goat's Head Soup was full of subliminal messages about bestiality, Sticky Fingers had that fly-zip on the cover that just begged to be pulled down and don't get me started on His Satanic Majesty's Requests . . .

I suppose the positive from all of this is that as long as the church is still in denial, it is still in decline. Its mildly amusing that its demise should come about by its own deeds.
Those white haired pale skinned primates are facing extinction and its a great shame that they never fulfilled their true role on this earth.

Blame it on the stones. A great song by Kristofferson. A song all about the attitudes that blamed the Rolling Stones, Rock 'n'Roll etc. for the loss of morals and reaction against everything else that the establishment held dear.........like the church, politicians, out-dated laws etc.

The Catholic Church, is a deeply evil and sick organisation and has been so for at least a thousand years...at least in the time of the Borgias they were little more open about sex...albeit rapes, orgies and necrophilia. Ireland is an example of a country, where for centuries their depravity was mostly unfettered, globally their collaboration with Nazis in WWII , and role in spreading AIDS in Africa are typical of their diseased mindset.

For starters history is not so well documented...but it appears they may have aided civilisation and learning a bit more back then...but a thousand years of evil should be enough for humanity to have learned their lesson

Simple fact is that sex is one of the driving forces of human nature. Suppressing the sexual urge is contrary to nature leaving calculated celibacy open to almost guaranteed rejection. We skirt around the whole subject of sex and in all the reams of paper about the abuse not one mention has been made that the guilty clerical people were/are deeply sexually frustrated. In no way trying to exonerate people guilty of serious sex crimes but we will never come to terms with past sex crimes and reduce future sex crimes if we continue to refuse serious discussion on human sexual activity

Plenty of information confirming this .There has always been pedophiles and this is why its culturally taboo .You are more likely to be abused by a member of your own family and i getting kinda weary of the Catholic church being targetting as the bastion of pedophiles.
There is NO direct link to celibacy and homosexuality in sexual preference . Pedophilia is a sexual orientation . Pedophiles will find any way to gain access to children whether this is being a teacher in letterfrack or a teacher or a social worker.
In fact i would go as far to say that there are probably more active pedophiles in Ireland since the catholic guilt of the church has been diminished. The desensitization of people to the sexualisation of children has giving certain sickos disposed towards children hasnt helped either.

People in Africa get AIDS because they have unprotected sex and the role of women is subordinate .Its a cultural thing and the responsibilty of the government not of the church GROW UP
