Councillor John Lyons of PBP party wants to fly the flag of Palestine over city Hall to demonstrate his hatred of Israel.
He isn't doing it for that reason and it has nothing to do with the topic in hand

I'd imagine the lefties will throw the gays under the bus or somehow blame Putin for it
Well it is happening in Russia. Hardly a stretch to say Putin could stop it with one call.

Such stories might become more frequent with time due to demographics

How Islam Will Change Russia

Russia is becoming increasingly a Muslim country. Out of a total population of over 146 million (including two million in annexed Crimea), it counts about 15 million people of Muslim background—even if not all are believers and even fewer practice Islam. Given forthcoming demographic changes, by around 2050 Muslims will represent between one third (according to the most conservative estimates) and one half (according to the most ‘alarmist’ assessments) of the Russian population. This ‘Islamization’ of Russia—not in the sense of radical Islam but of a rising number of citizens self-referring to Islam—will impact both Russia’s domestic situation and its foreign policy options in the medium and long term. Islam’s growing importance in Russia will shape the future of the country in at least five main directions: the overall demographic balance of the country; the strategy of ‘normalizing’ the regions of the North Caucasus; Russia’s migration policy; Russia’s positioning on the international scene; and the transformation of Russian national identity.

You lefty liberals used to attack Putin for not giving Chechnya enough autonomy. Now you attack Putin for not laying down the law in Chechnya.

No we are critizing Putin because we don't believe he bother to lay down the law as he is one of the main instigators of the current political homophobia sweeping Russia!

The reason for mentioning it is to show the hypocricy of the Left who only protest or show concern when they don't support the country where abuse real or alleged is happening.

Nice try, but Russias history of homophobia isn't linked to the presence of Muslim minorities.

In the USSR, homosexuality was punishable with prison and hard labour, not because the Communists wanted to pander to the sensibilities of religious identities. Gays were considered "outsiders" and associated with paedophiles and Fascists.

You ought to see read some of the more looney-toon speeches given by old Communists about how the British for example were all homosexuals to a man :)

Russia bucks the trend whereby more religious countries tend to be less accepting of homosexuality. Only 33% of Russians say religion has any importance in their lives, while 16% say homosexuals should be accepted. On the other hand, Poland where religious belief is much, much higher has a figure of 42% in favour of tolerance.

Basically what happened in Russia is that the Communists continued the Tsarist regime that the state should make moral choices for its citizens. That never went away and Putin is just carrying on as per usual.

You don't need Muslims for this.

We criticised Putin for leveling Grozny and committing war crimes. I now criticise him for allowing this barbarity. Less of the inane strawman and more of the topic in hand please
