The Republic of Ireland looks set to be the first European country to make it illegal for convicted paedophiles to travel overseas. Draft legislation expected to be introduced before the Dáil later this month is being spearheaded by Independent TD, Maureen O'Sullivan.

The campaign is also being supported by Philippines-based Irish priest, Father Shay Cullen who is highlighting the problem of foreign (including Irish) child rapists who travel to Asian countries solely for the purpose of sexually abusing children.

The irony that it is a priest driving this. What about taking their passports off them?
There are people who find negatively in everything. I'm a strong critic of the RCC and it's behaviour with regard to sexual abuse among other things, but this seems like a sensible and responsible bill, and if a priest happens to be championing it so what, it stands on its merits.

ya can't generalise. Not all priests are kiddy fiddlers.

This measure is long over due.

There are serious constitutional problems with any such proposal because the Irish constitution stipulates a right to travel outside the state for all citizens.IINM.

May not be possible

As an EU citizen surely you have the right to travel where you want within it

Its one of those Great Ideas

A very interesting point. However, does that only apply specifically within the context of Article 40.3.3?

Can we also make sure pedophiles don't come into this country ?
No we can not.
There are no background checks for criminal records on those entering the country.

Is this more of your very personal understanding of reality? The British banned convicted football hooligans from travelling and there was no complaint. Not to mention that France and Britain (and likely others too) both already have anti-paedophile laws like the one proposed.

What sort of alternative dimension do you post from?

I think it's great that a Priest is driving this. It's easy to criticise them but maybe the scandals in the church means this Priest is trying to do some good in this area.

France has imprisoned people who didn't even manage to travel. Maybe Britain too, I don't know, but it's not an EU issue for sure.

Gail O'Rorke was prevented from traveling to Switzerland to accompany a friend to die there.

Nope... restrictions can be placed on travel based on criminal history. Freedom of movement is not an absolute right.
