Respite care grant cuts 'modest', says Rabbitte | Irish Examiner

Pat Rabbitte has today refused to deal with SF calls for a reversal of the cut to respite care grants, which he has described as "modest". The cut was 20%.

Earlier in the Dail he had commented that “Everybody had to contribute something”.

The 325 euro cut is one of the most regressive cuts of the budget.

The Carers association said:
The role of the family carer, while rewarding can also prove to be very stressful, which may take its toll on the physical and emotional well-being of the carer.

He said;

“The annual respite care grant for children and others with severe disabilities is cut by €325. This cut comes at a time when respite services are being steadily cut-back across the country due to the government imposed cuts to health service funding. This money is invaluable for the financial and indeed mental well-being of family carers.

Absolutely disgraceful, even Brian Hayes is up in arms about it, hard to believe he has more of a social conscience than Mr. Rabbitte the self called "Socialist"

These are Money grabbing carers of severely handicapped money grabbers...

Who will stand up for the poor downtrodden wealthy, and foreign bondholders and pension funds if not Pat Rabbitte .

wtf?

Hayes was on the last word defending this, saying they had no choice but to do it.

So a 20% cut in this grant is "savage", but the 30% cuts to politicians pay and expenses over the last 3 years is just spare change, and they need to be cut waaaaay more.

Why can people never put things in perspective?

Puke making. Attacking the very weakest of our citizens.

Our carers should all drop their charges off at their nearest hospital and cost the state billions in revenge.

There will be a protest tomorrow outside the Dail at noon. Many carers and disabled people, due to the nature of their roles, cannot attend but everyone is welcome to show their solidarity.

Pat Rabbitte is not a 'Socialist'. Having listened to a number of interviews with him since taking office the levels of arrogance, impatience and disconnect from his base has astounded me. Some weeks back, while being interviewed by Pat Kenny, a Labour voting listener texted in criticising something Rabbitte had said. It was mild criticism, valid and completely genuine. Rabbitte dismissed it with contempt, saying that Fianna Fail voters often bombarded radio programmes when he was being interviewed.

I found his attitude condescending and arrogant, very different from the campaigner for fairness who sat in opposition.

Along with Gilmore, I hope Rabbitte gets the pointy end of the stick from Labour's rank and file. He's become another liability in the wrong Party.

The contempt these politicians hold the people in knows no bounds.

I just hope some of them need careers some day & they realise the hardship they brought on those who physically could not protest.

Time for a serious changing of the guard & political shift in Ireland.

“”It was simply not possible to [make a Budget] unless savings were made across the board,” he told the Dáil. “Everybody had to contribute something”.

What about politician's allowances Pat or their pay? Some of your party members advisors and their pay? Croke Park Agreement? Savings have to be made across the board alright, just not from you, your political buddies or the people most likely to vote for you and your shower of liars.

We must not impose a small tax increase on single incomes over 100,000, these are the wealth creators in this trickle down society...Sure won't they go all Atlas Shrugged on us and up sticks to a tax free paradise!?
