Saudi Women celebrate their new found freedoms!

Women in Saudi Arabia need not wear head cover or the black abaya - the full-length robes symbolic of Islamic piety - as long as their attire is "decent and respectful", the kingdom's crown prince has said.

Call out the instigators
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right…

Great news for Saudi women, now they just have to get past their fathers/brothers and sundry other male relatives who will have seriously different views. I wonder how long it will be until the chap is bumped off? On the surface he seems progressive, but you know what they say about not trusting someone who looks fair but feels foul.

feminists wont like this, saudi women will be subject of the male gaze and patriarchal beauty standards. not to mention that they will need to invent a phrase that covers "does my bum look big in this"

You can't expect this to transform the country but at least it will allow those Saudi families who aren't over pious more autonomy in how they dress. It's something of a step for a country whose functionaries literally beat girls back into a burning building (there to be burned to death rather than to appear without headbags in public) only a short while back.

A little bit of progress maybe Trump has managed to get through to them and make them change their medieval ways its still a long long way off anything approaching modern civilisation but its a start at least.

Saudi Arabia will never be as a modern as tbe West would wish to. Saudi is the heart of Islamic centre and it will always have those who oppose such modernism and call for 'Jihad' on kuffar - and their teaching and way of life......

who cares. Its like saying a bankrobber will obey all traffic regulations when leaving the scene of the crime.

ludicrous cosmetic 'improvement'.

I will be happy when Saudi has a gay strip of pubs down in Riyad, atheism out in the open and bacon toasties available in every restaurant.

So let's see the paycheck progressives line up to day this is man splaining and nobody forces women to wear the hateful veil.

Well done Salman for finally deciding not to treat women like second class citizens.

Wherever the veil is worn it must be opposed. No freedom without the freedom of women and that freedom doesn't come under a cloth.

Always remember Kevin that it's a free choice to wear thr veil.

Even when someone is beating you back into the burning school.

This did not happen by the way. It did happen in Ireland. In the Poor Claire convent in Cavan to be prices. 80 years or so ago.

I can’t help thinking of another guy in that neighbourhood who had big plans a while back:

Does the prince really understand the task he has set himself? And is he the right man to carry it off? Significant, permanent, orderly change of this magnitude is tricky. Very tricky.

Didn't the Poor Clare sister in Cavan (fond of their own hijab) let orphans burn to death rather than they be seen in their night gowns after a fire broke out.
