Supposed to be close, but Betfair now has 1/100 on Lib Dem winning today's by-election.

The by election was called after Zac Goldsmith (Conservative) resigned his seat in protest over Heathrow airport expansion. However the Lib Dems see it partly as a Brexit-themed election and hope to influence events by winning the seat. Goldsmith is running as an Independent and the Tories are not running a candidate.

Richmond Park voted 70% for Remain so the result might be a sign of whether the issue is settled or not.

Will a LD victory influence the course of Brexit, or the likelihood May can't get Article 50 through Parliament?

If Saint Patrick's Athletic don't win this one they may as well give up.

Looking good for the Lib Dems , will it be viewed as an anti Brexit vote in the constituency?

Doers it bode well for them overall for the next election?

Labour sources predicting Lib Dem gain by 2000 votes. Tory majority here was 23000 in 2015, but this time there is no Tory candidate as Goldsmith ran as Independent

Lib Dems have it
A kick in the teeth for Brexit!
In what way?. Richmond voted to remain in the EU 72% to 28%. Its a remain stronghold. It was a Lib Dem stronghold right up till 2010.

If constituencies are gonna vote for candidates based on how Brexit went then it's no wonder Labour have said they wont block art 50. They'd be wiped on in the North of England.

Its a kick in the teeth for Goldsmith. As for Brexit its still gonna happen.

One might expect that the electorate of Richmond Park would be impressed with the work Theresa May and the 3 Musketeers are doing taking Britain out of the horrible EU - doesn't seem like many have been won over...
A high profile Tory with a 23,000 majority beaten by a political novice is a vote of no confidence in Brexit

Totally understandable result to be honest. It won't make a single jot of a difference to the faith of brexit or the 3rd runway

Probably fair comment.

It's never been a stronghold - it alternates between Tory & LD.
Goldsmith campaigned against Heathrow before he was elected & threatened to resign if expansion went ahead.
That was widely reported.
He was charismatic, good looking, charming and had money behind him. Everything was branded about him not Tories. Guradian or similar ran an expose in 2010 about him & funding.

LDs made it all about Brexit.

They also won ground war. They had people on the ground, I presume Goldsmith didn't this time.

Re Labour it's an economic illiterate utopian socialist scared of any leadership just wanting to umm err pose & agitate, talk about Fidel. In the UK it is seemingly economically illiterate Nativism fed by lies - NHS being given £300 million per week, having cake & eating it, banning East Europeans with no consequences (yet there's more Brits in Spain & probably in West Cork),

Brexit is happening because Pandora's box is open due to above.
Now Johnson & Davies are rowing back.

Gove & Fox won't because they are deluded as utopian as Corbyn.

Irrespective of circumstances, a stunning turnaround.
To lose a 23k majority with just 40k votes up for grabs is just off the scale
Will knock any idea of a snap election firmly out of the Tories heads.

Labour have withdrawn from all real world politics
The looney left candidates they are likely to put up next time leaves the door wide open to Lib Dems everywhere
