New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said a ban on foreigners buying existing homes would begin in early 2018, but the restrictions would not apply to Australians.

Pretending it's about NZ homeless crisis(much worse than Ireland) but it's really just old fashioned racism. NZ settlers tend to panic if an Asian or Irish family moves into their neighborhood as it lowers the prices due to the settlers not wanting to live beside foreigners or natives for that matter.

They will continue of course to beg foreigners to come work in their country but then tell them they can't buy a home.

Immigrant doctors are filling more than half the new positions in New Zealand hospitals, prompting warnings that the medical system is being "propped up" by doctors who may not be suited to New Zealand's health needs.

Thank God we don't have a right wing government in this country to do something as backward and inward looking as this.

I hope EU law ensures we can't do this. Anybody know?

A brilliant solution to a housing crisis. We should do the same.

I thought this legislation specifically targeted overseas organisations/companies buying up houses. Not nationals who live in the country can buy property. Which seems fair to me.

House prices have doubled in some parts of New Zealand in the last few years. A lot of that is down to foreign investors. You may be aware that there is a trend among the very rich to buy in that country, as described in the link below. The Government has to do something.

Not that our scumbag government would do anything similar. Varadkar is some piece of work. He told Macron that there'd be no discussion on a common tax policy in the EU because Ireland is soverign, and then he says that he can't even collect the full 12.5 percent tax rate on MNCs because they wouldn't like it! So we're not soverign at all. Our social policy is dictated by overseas corporations.

We are constantly told we have thousands of homeless in this country and these homeless have been evicted for various reasons. No one seems to ask the question, who has replaced the homeless in their previous homes? I wonder what % of the new tenants are immigrants??

Could just be acting as a responsible State.

Some people see ‘racism ‘ everywhere. Mexico doesn’t allow foreigners to buy property there, and I’d dispute that the State of Mexico is racist. That’s their interpretation of national sovereignty.
It’s one of the privileges one wins with national independence- to decide which asset classes in your country can be bought up (‘invested in’ , is the jargon) by foreigners. If you are a poor country ( like Mexico) with a large wealthy neighbour, everything you’re looking at will be bought up by a foreign company or individual in a flash.
Poland on accession to the EU got exemptions to stall Germans buying up the place for kopeks. Greece in meltdown resisted demands to widen it’s sales of land to foreign interests.
It’s very doubtful if Londongrad’s role as the hot money bolt hole of the world has really been helpful to the average resident there- just try to buy a house there on an average salary.

Probably part of the NZF demands. Maybe they don't want to be like Ireland with thousands homeless. Yes most of ours are in hotels and hostels, but some hostels are notorious for drugs addicts and you wouldn't want your children living next to them.

Right wing?

It's the Labour Party. Here is the hot take from their new Prime Minister:

New Zealand's new prime minister called capitalism a "blatant failure", before citing levels of homelessness and low wages as evidence that "the market has failed" her country's poor.

It is the Left that most typically hate foreign investment (if you are using Left/Right in the sense of Socialist/Market-based). I really don't know how anyone can claim otherwise.

Staggering ignorance. She's a left-wing feminist leading the Labour Party who has said and I quote "Capitalism has been a blatant failure". Are you an actual PBP supporter or trying to parody one?

I'm.fine with crackdown on property speculators after they brought the world economy crashing down in 2008.

Winston Peters, the leader of the right-wing, anti-immigrant New Zealand First, announced yesterday evening he will form a coalition government with the Labour Party. With the support of the Greens as well,
Left wing my ass.

She is a typical Labour. Just like in Auz/UK/Ire the NZ Labour is now a vehicle for right wing loons.
