Only four people now remain alive who have stood on another celestial body. Alan Bean died earlier today. He was the "Lunar Module Pilot" on Apollo 12, the only all-navy mission to the moon; they were probably the most colourful set of characters to do so. They touched down about 300ft from an earlier lander they were hoping to retrieve some pieces from (both to study how the hardware stood up and to prove their could pin-point land on the moon).

Despite the grand sounding title, the LMP was the most junior of Apollo positions and they didn't actually pilot the Lunar Lander. Military prerogative saw that role taken over by the commander. Compared with almost all of his fellow moon-walkers Bean always retained a kind of innocent wonder about what he had been through. Missing in him was the kind of bravado and alpha-male pride that was not uncommon amongst that group. He was a talented and humble aviator who found himself caught up in what for many is Mankind's greatest ever adventure. You may recall Bean as being the astro who spent the rest of his life painting scenes of what he experienced.

An extraordinary group of men, the men of the Gemini and Apollo missions.

Like several of the other astronauts, Bean became trapped in the time and space of those 4-5 day lunar missions for the rest of his life thereafter. His paintings being a testimony to this.

Loved him in his programmes on TV. Amazed he was able to get to the moon given his driving record. RIP Mr Bean, you were out of this world.

This will give you an idea of how generous and patient a man he was. I don't know he restrained himself from flooring this lunatic.

Buzz Aldrin showed less restraint:

The real problem with the moon landings is that the people who came back were not the same people.

That merely proves my point that the people who came back from the moon were different people.

I'm proud to say that I could name the men who walked on the moon faster than I could name the Kardashians. How many Kardashians are there anyway?

Why don’t you ask the Man in the Moon?
He's shut up shop! I thought you'd be next best.

Seriously though TFM, you don't believe all this stuff about landings in Lourdes a century before man boldly went where no had gone before?
