BBC News - Film critic Roger Ebert dies at 70 of cancer

Very sad; legendary film critic Roger Ebert's passed away after battling cancer for the last few years. He hosted the most famous movie review show ever along with Gene Siskel for 2 decades on US TV, and they also made it over to European TV. He lost his lower jaw and ability to speak during his last cancer operation, but continued to write reviews for the Sun Tribune. His archive of reviews is available under http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/

Here he talks with Martin Scorsese about their favourite 1990s films

And here he's talking about some of the worst movies of the 90s. Which is always more fun.

They were a great combination, rarely agreed on everything.
Funny, I can remember most of the highlights of Full Metal Jacket but none of Platoon.

"I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear. I hope to be spared as much pain as possible on the approach path. I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same state. What I am grateful for is the gift of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter. You can't say it wasn't interesting. My lifetime's memories are what I have brought home from the trip. I will require them for eternity no more than that little souvenir of the Eiffel Tower I brought home from Paris"
Roger Ebert.

Never remember his tv appearances but whenever I watched a film I would read his review, and often only his review. He could be thought provoking. Incidentally, while I preferred Full Metal Jacket, I thought Platoon was more profound, maybe it suffered from trying to overreach.
