Brazil President Dilma Rousseff removed from office by Senate - BBC News
Brazil's Senate has voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office for manipulating the budget.

It puts an end to the 13 years in power of her left-wing Workers' Party. Ms Rousseff had denied the charges.

Sixty-one senators voted in favour of her impeachment and 20 against, meeting the two-thirds majority needed to remove her from the presidency.

Michel Temer has been sworn in as president and will serve out Ms Rousseff's term until 1 January 2019.
The state of Brazilian politics is very disappointing.

Rousseff and her predecessor, Lula da Silva, claimed to be socialists. So why didn't they do anything about the poverty in Brazil when they had the chance?

This was a US régime orchestrated coup d'état. Rousseff certainly never did anything as criminal as helping Apple to avoid 13 billion in taxes.

The official reason for impeachment—that Rousseff improperly moved funds from a federal bank to cover cash-flow shortfalls in government programs (all the funds were repaid to the federal bank)—is a practice that Brazilian presidents have used in the past and is not a crime. Rousseff has not been accused of any personal enrichment or of being connected with Brazil’s widespread political corruption.

Under the Constitution, impeachment is only valid for actions that are committed intentionally against the Constitution itself. That does not include budgetary matters.

Of course its a bum rap.

Sure isnt there a phone tap recording of a call between two senators planning this in order to stop corruption investigations against themselves.

Venezuela and Ecuador have cut diplomatic ties and recalled their ambassadors. Gerry Adams is preparing a statement apparently.

Another day more "comrades" with their snouts in the trough.

This whole process was a travesty.

The vast majority of Rousseff's accusers would make her look like a plaster saint.

Brazil, like much of Latin America, appears to be run by an elite that's utterly rotten to the core.
So totally different to Ireland then. Except we had a socialist running the kip for a good while there too... that's the only similarity.

I was a bit surprised that RTE 9 o'clock news didn't think this newsworthy enough to even mention the event. They still have at least one reporter out there at the moment, covering the Hickey case, so it's not like the resources aren't there to cover it. Bit disappointing, when every twist and turn in American politics is covered ad nauseam.

She has been found guilty but the 'crimes' were minor by the standards of her peers. Removing her should have been left to the voters. All in all, a shameful day for Brazil and democracy. The oligarchs have spoken.

Your own link says that Rousseff got the boot in order to help kill the corruption investigation

Some are clearly motivated by a desire to kill the Lava Jato investigation, which Rousseff refused to do. The impeachment process was initiated by Cunha after the Workers party refused to protect him from an ethics committee investigation. Secretly recorded conversations have also revealed that the PMDB leader in the Senate, Romero Jucá, wanted to remove the president so the Lava Jato investigation could be choked by her successor.
