Looks like the State broadcaster is going to interview the FG/FF/Lab/SF candidates tonight on PrimeTime excluding all other candidates in the upcoming by-election in Meath East.

Section 42 of the Broadcasting Act, 2009, provides that:-
(1) The Authority shall prepare, and from time to time as occasion requires, revise, in accordance with this section, a code or codes governing standards and practice (“broadcasting code”) to be observed by broadcasters.

2) Broadcasting codes shall provide: –

(a) that all news broadcast by a broadcaster is reported and presented in an objective and impartial manner and without any expression of the broadcaster‟s own views,

(b) that the broadcast treatment of current affairs, including matters which are either of public controversy or the subject of current public debate, is fair to all interests concerned and that the broadcast matter is presented in an objective and impartial manner and without any expression of the broadcaster‟s own views,

(e) that a broadcaster does not, in the allocation of time for transmitting party political broadcasts, give an unfair preference to any political party,

Serious mistake by RTE?

It does seem unfair.

If they had just had ff and fg there would have been uproar from lab and sf.

Where's the cutoff point and how do they decide ?

Unfair? The Broadcasting Code on Referenda and Election Coverage is very clear, and is being broken?

Why is this on national tv anyway? Surely these candidates should be having these debates on local radio or maybe in a town hall somewhere...

how many times will Helen McEtee say im 26 :D
The labour candidate had a nice reply to Thomas Byrne on vb.

Byrne was playing the family man card by saying he had a young family with 3 kids.

The labour guy came back with "we'll if that's the crucial factor, I've got four kids"

In 2011 there were 9 candidates in the constituency. Outside of the parties invited tonight, the other candidates amassed less than 10% of the FPV. There's got to be a cutoff, hard to say RTE have got this wrong.

They still had gay Mitchell and mary davis for the presidential debates even when the polls had them miles behind.

I think the people of Ireland have wised up to the Mings and the Mick Wallaces. No need to entertain another Independent in need of a good barber.

Oh sure, if you're going to let Vinny at them then you can have 3, 7 or 70 candidates on the same show. Vinny can slurringly ask and answer his own questions with any amount of guests, it's his main skill.

He makes for brilliant tv though. I thought he was going to deck Sam Smyth the other night.
