Prime Time Investigates the "flagship" and indeed the only ship of RTE's investigative journalism
wing produced only three shows this year all three shown in May
on the following topics.

1: Tyre dumping
2: Alzheimer's Disease
3: on-line child abuse in Ireland

In December alone in 2009 they produced three shows.

It is very important more so now than ever that the National broadcaster
for the public good conduct hard hitting investigative journalism
Its arguable that a show like Prime Time Investigates if run well
would be of great benefit to the country, in theory!

Why does it appear to be in decline? Is this because of budget cutbacks?

Please note I am talking about Prime Time Investigates and not Prime time the show which shows a extended news report (with scary music in the background) on an issue and then gets two different politicians to fight and talk rubbish for 10 -15 minutes. Theres a big difference.

This needs to be investigated ;)

Seriously though you are right. PTI has a strong record and we need it.

Maybe something to do with the DG leaving...Gov.ie were certainly NOT coming off well in the Prime Time Investigares format, and to be hinest the whole tone of RTE has become very subservient to "the green jersey" mentality in recent months

The investigations last months so I presume that's the main factor behind so few episodes. In the UK Panorama is on once a week and doesn't have any impact.

RT Television - Programmes - News - Prime Time Investigates

AFAIK RTE have done 3 prime time investigates this year!!!!!!!!!!

Does this mean that television investigation journalism is now dead in RTE.
at a time we need it most?

:mad::mad::mad:
I wonder is it money or that Fianna Fail put pressure on them to stop as several of those Prime Times investigations did do immense harm to Fianna Fail.

Either way it's a great pity and Ireland needs investigative journalism now more then ever and right now the only media outlet that does anything in that area is the Daily/Sunday Mail.

So very true - it takes the English to yet again show gombeen Paddy how it's done and that a newspaper can actually be more than a cheerleading rag for FF. With the Tribune about to go and the Sindo...well to be frank anybody who 'reads' that should be considered retarded...it leaves us with the SBP which isn't a bad read to be honest.
There is some good analysis in the SBP, but there isn't any real investigative journalism. The lack of a sports section really annoys me as well. To be fair though it does avoid basically reprinting press releases which the Times and Indo are terrible for doing.

Saw an ad for it just there, its starting up again

First show.
Tobacco smuggling

The dogs on the street know this is going on its because the "government"
set the price of tobacco too high.
what else do we really need to know about this!

Surely there is something else they can investigate like
the banks/developers high wages at the top of RTE etc maybe

second show
TV licence avoidance.;)
