The well-known business consultant and former solicitor James Osborne has died at the age 68 in Donegal.

Mr Osborne was a director of Ryanair and a former chairman of Independent News and Media.
He was close to the late Ryanair founder Tony Ryan and was legal advisor to Mr Ryan's Guinness Peat Aviation.

He was educated at Campbell College, Belfast and Trinity College, Dublin where he qualified as a solicitor in 1973

James Osborne was Managing Partner of A&L Goodbody for 12 years, during which time the firm became the largest in Ireland. Since his retirement from the practice of law, James served on a number of boards of publicly quoted Irish companies including Bank of Ireland plc, Golden Vale plc, Adare plc, Carrolls Holdings plc and Independent News Media of which he was Chairman.

When chairman of Independent News and Media, he was voted off the board after less than a year as Denis O'Brien wrested control of the media group from Tony O'Reilly.

This was the Sindo article that REDACTED phoned INM chairman James about, to stop its publication Revealed: top 13 borrowers who owe Anglo - Independent.ie

In Independent article entitled "Anne Harris: O’Brien – the real issue is press freedom" and dated June 17 2012, Ms Harris wrote:
Fearless newspapers are essential in a country whose political culture is marked by 'endemic corruption',

Earlier last week, I had my first conversation (excepting a few words at the funeral of my husband Aengus Fanning) with James Osborne, the former chairman of Independent News & Media, who was voted out in an O'Brien-led boardroom bloodbath at the AGM.

In the course of the conversation, he informed me that in April of this year Denis O'Brien, the major shareholder in INM, had called him up to get him to "pull" an article in this newspaper.

The article related to Denis O'Brien's borrowings from Anglo Irish Bank. A spokesman for Denis O'Brien yesterday denied that this took place.

Mr. Osborne was also on the Irish Heritage Trust and the International Advisory Board of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Planes, press, cigs, surgeons, heritage and the law. That's quite a golden circle membership.

However, he has family, so any negative comments are inappropriate. His standing up to Denis is hugely to his credit. That the millionaire was forced out, is a serious negative reflection on the billionaire.
