Apparently another attempt at legalising Same Sex Marriage is on the way in Northern Ireland.

O Muilleoir takes first steps in bid to legalise same-sex marriage - BelfastTelegraph.co.uk

Will it be different this time, particulary as now they are the only part of the two islands that are out of step and more especially since the referendum in the South which lead to widespread jubilition not just in Dublin castle but all over the world in positive headlines.

This part of the article was interesting in light of the way the 'petiton of concern' mechanism is used in N. Ireland to veto legislation:

Demands have been increasing for a future 'free vote' on the issue and there have also been suggestions a private member's Bill could be introduced.

New Justice Minister Claire Sugden also reaffirmed her support for same-sex marriage this week and said that she hoped to discuss the issue with other Executive Ministers in the near future.

It's inevitible, it's just that the DUP will have to soft shoe it.

The dup are mandated to use the PoC to block any new attempts at enacting new SSM legislation. It'll be after the assembly election in 2021 before Stormont will do anything unless there is a legal bid to enforce change of the law via EU courts. If that's no the case then it's a pointless exercise by O'Meuilloir.

Can there not be a free vote like it was suggested in the article?

There's no such thing as a mandate to discriminate. The DUP and their ilk will be dragged kicking and screaming if necessary into the 21st century.

Try telling that to Conor Murphy, Ruane and Gildernew ...

Our society is based around discrimination - or are you saying that you would be happy to be operated on after an accident by an unqualified person - we discriminate by insisting on certain qualifications .... what is at issue is where the lines are drawn. Same sex marriage will come to NI. And IMO it will be a good thing. It doesn't help that people like you play parochial and tribal politics with every social issue.

The DUP has an electoral mandate to block it. Unless Unionists stop voting for them, that won't be changing any time soon.

If calling out bigots is playing politics then so be it. There's no such thing as a mandate to deny civil rights. One day you lot will learn that.

Well one would have to say that even if they are kicking and screaming the 21st century is very much on their door currently on a whole host of socially progressive issues for anyone looking in from the outside.

You have to admire the audacity of the DUP. They know their know constituency and they cater to them. FF and FG are afraid somebody will say something mean about them on Rté or the Irish Times.

Ulster says no.

They have so many wierd off shoots of protestantism up there, I'd be surprised if this ever happens. They're Europes version of Pitcairn island.

What political party represents Catholics who believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman? Sinn Fein hold Catholic values in complete contempt. Contempory Sinn Fein are more anti-Catholic than Iain Paisley ever was.

If the SF minister in question has persuaded the DUP to go against their electoral mandate (only just given to them in May) then that'll be interesting. I'd bet my house on it that they won't. The courts are the only way that SSM legislation would get through Stormont as the DUP will PoC any attempt to enact legislation. It simply doesn't matter what O'Meuilloir gets a load of civil servants to do on the matter, he's wasting their time unless there's a court directive from a higher legislation by which NI is bound.

Catholics can treat gay marriage like we treat divorce. The Church can just ignore it on the basis it's civil law not cannon law being changed.

It was pathetic how now not a single FF or FG TD had the guts to stand up for all their constituents who have conservative social beliefs. They are all terrified that Pantifreak might go on TV and call them homophobic or that Una Doolally will tweet something critical.

This is the modern political consensus in the Western world. On economic issues the right get everything i.e. no tax on big business, decreasing workers' rights etc, while on cultural issues the Marxists get everything i.e. the gay agenda forced upon school children, state sponsored quangos to promote feminism and multiculturalism etc.

Tell me what economic policies the left have pushed through in recent times? The fact is the left have swapped the working class for gays and Muslims.

Is it true that gay men will only kiss and cuddle other men, and not women?
