Saudi woman pictured not wearing hijab faces calls for her execution | The Independent

This act of resistance, just like that of Rosa Parkes - the black woman who wouldn't move bus seats - may possibly land this woman in jail or something even more horrific. Without the support of the Western sisters, and brothers, the Saudis will destroy this brave woman.

We have seen other Saudi women risk imprisonment for the right to drive a car or go out in public without a male relative watching them, but by throwing off the burka of servitude and exposing her hair and ankles, this woman has taken a great leap forward.

Somewhere, somehow, and by somebody a beginning must be made and that the first act of resistance is always, and must be ever, premature, imprudent and dangerous. - James Fintan Lalor

Western feminists, like western leftists don't think the freedoms they enjoy need be enjoyed by regions enjoined against western hegemony. If you have an explanation that better explains leftist/intersectionalist/feminist response to abuses in the non-western world am I most eager to hear them.

It's a pity she had to delete her facebook account as we could have supported her there.

Who are the Western feminists you are referring to?

They are legion. Perhaps the lowest hanging of these strange fruit would be those who praise the veil as being some sort of statement against 'western objectification'.

Here's a good example.

Why we should stop using the phrase 'female genital mutilation' - RN Drive - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

(Hint: Because criticising the butchering of little girl's genitalia for the singular purposes of reducing the sexual pleasure as might be available to her in the future in support of a culture which sees females as breeding units to be traded and controlled by males is 'culturally insensitive'. Especially if the ones criticising are white males.)

She shouldn't be told what she can and cannot wear by the state, and indeed no one should. I wonder what the reaction from western governments and wider society will be to this? I'm guessing it won't exactly get people out on the streets.

You have to go to some unheard of person half way round the globe in one article.

So again Kevin Parlon, could you please back up your sweeping vast generalistion of 'western feminists' with a) someone we might have heard of, in say Ireland or even say the UK, b) lot of them c) that they represent all western feminists and d) prove to us they are what you term western feminists.

As I said yesterday on these boards, there is no moral trench unplumbable by lefist zealots in search of idealogical utopia.

I wonder if any prominent feminists distanced themselves from this - if not we have to assume their support for it?

OK. Point me to the last protest, virtual, online or physical made by a feminist group in support of the right of Arab females to wear what they want. To drive. To not be subject to rape within marriage.

Any example petition or protest would do.

Can you point to one?

It was met with silence from Australian feminists.

It is in the deafening silence that we can hear the voices of western feminism.

And yet I'm sure that the vast majority of moderate feminists would be horrified by it. So why do they not speak out, is it fear or is it simply that moderate feminists have lost control of the feminist movement?

Feminism, like environmentalism and human rights have transformed from causes easy for any well adjusted human to identify with and support to causes now indistinguishable from the radical left. The reason is entryism.

Several thousand km of distance, it would seem. Western feminism is not about the struggle for the rights of poor women in backward countries. It is about the struggle to enhance the privileges of rich women in advanced countries. Also feminist activists tend to be racists, as in they get way less outspoken about any given issue if the men involved are not white.

Don't conflate women and feminists. Most women refuse to identify as feminists. Maybe because they have very few actual problems and notice that western feminists have fk all to say about women with real problems.
