Most world equity funds are up 20% in 2009. Some grew by loads more. Smart folks invested at the bottom.of the bubble.

Does repaying borrowings qualify as saving? What about putting a few bob into a pension plan? What about putting a few bob away for kids third level fees?

Where is that Zurich Bank wealth report used by SP/SF/ULA to justify €10 billion in tax annually.

If you taxed "savings" at an additional 10% ( we already pay DIRT of 30% ) it would raise €386m

If we are one of the most indebted nations per head then it must follow that we must become one of the greatest savers if there is to be an avoidance of mass default!

Average saving if there are 2.2 million people available for work is €1,755

Bear in mind that disposable income is falling and

ESB +22%
Gas +12%
Bus fares +15%
Luas +8%
Private Health + 15%
Health Levy +40%
Motor Tax + 15%
Petrol +3%
Insurance + 3%

All State associated costs are going through the roof.

Wait a year and it will buy a house
It's nearly a year now and that €3400 would probably get you a 'bijou' residence in an up an coming area (auctioneer speak for a dog house beside a halting site).....
