One of the greatest living film directors passed away today at the venerable age of of 93.

Seijun Suzuki was a genius IMHO, often relegated to the cult end of the spectrum. His pop art, jazz inflected style was all his own, and his commitment to doing things his own way got him fired from Nikkatsu Studios in the sixties for not just banging out cookie cutter yakuza flicks, but rather cooking up stylised, sumptuous, deleriously hip classics. The look, feel and pace of his work were all truly unique.

If you haven't seen the likes of Tokyo Drifter or Branded to Kill, now's as good a time as any to check them out. And if you have already seen them, well now's as good a time as any to give them another whirl.
