Former President of the EU Parliament Martin Schulz has not only become favourite to lead the SPD but has got an endorsement from Gabriel Siegmar following Siegmar's sudden resignation as Leader of the SPD. Siegmar owned up to his own leadership failings and said that ultimately the party is more important than the individual who leads them.

Obviously he wouldn't get too far in Irish politics where Enda Kenny & Gerry Adams have been around at the top since 1975 while Martin spent 14 years as a Minister.

Schulz was recently appointed as Economics Minister and is expected to switch to Foreign Affairs. BREXIT may well get a lot interesting as Merkel looks over her shoulder at Schulz playing hard ball with his insight into Brussels

Schulz polls as well as Merkel and may well challenge her in Autumn. Auf widershehen Angela? Certainly the far right may find him a harder nut to crack.

What happens in a country when two dishonest, directionless, totally discredited mediocrities take the leadership of the two political machines likely to run a country ?

I felt embarrased when Ireland had Kennylite versus Meehaul themoneywasrestinginthewifesaccount Martin.

But this is just as disastrous, but with far more scale and impact.

The world can cope with Ireland having two muppets to pick from. This is another matter altogether.

There's something honourable about Siegmar putting his hand up and saying he wouldn't win and the party is bigger. Can you imagine Cowen saying that 8 years ago?

If the SPD think Schulz is the answer, then clearly the SPD do not understand the question.

This is another centre left political machine relying on hereditary political office holders to bring them to relevance. It is no longer working in other countries. And the SPD are now just as clueless as Ireland's champagne socialist franchise holders.

As Analyzer says.
They don't get the problem.
Or maybe it's more they want it to go unrecognised and unremarked.
The post war self flagellation is disappating.

People seem to think that has been forgotten about.

An integrationist challenges Merkel - the now leader of the pluralist liberal world.

An admirable move by Gabriel. He knew that he could not hope to compete with Merkel's popularity and stepped aside for arguably the best candidate; Schulz is very respected in Germany and obviously qualified for the job, besides Merkel he is the only politician I'd trust to deal with the upcoming political challenges.
