Scrap local councils

In the McCarthy Report, he suggested scraping some of the local town councils and merging some of the larger county councils. Surely, it's time a decision is taken on the recommendations. Many of these elected bodies are little more than talking shops, composed of 'twits'. If Mr Gormley is so intent in bringing in a harsh budget, for God sake, will he not publish the legislation to abolish these archaic legislators.

Apart from the pejorative remarks about the Councillors I largely agree with this. 5 Regional Councils of about 30 members each roughly along the lines of the EU constituencies would be enough. This would allow staff numbers to be reduced by about 30%. There could then be integrted regional plans on a menu of issues such as:
Planning./Development plans.
traffic
Roads
Parking
Water supply and leakage control
Parks

We don't live in Texas like.

I do not hold out one single hope fpoor this eminently sensible proposal or a variant being uptaken.

Ever see a turkey wishing for Christmas?

Yeah lets scrap all local government, not that they have any power or money as it is.Why have 1 Jackie Healy-Rae when you can have 160?

Then scrap the Seanad too ,while we're at it.Lets just be at the mercy of gombeen scumbags for all time in all places. At least it would be consistent, folks.

Given that europe is pulling all the strings lets cut out the seanad and the dail and leave the locals to look after the potholes and passports.

Yep, that's a good idea alright - they want to save money then do - but of course they don't want to save that kind of money, they'd rather hit those on social welfare and the low paid, raise taxes a little, and slash and burn services all over. The country is being run by cowards.
