“The SDLP continues to believe that Irish Unification is the biggest and the best idea around. This report should now prompt a national discussion on unity, our constitutional and economic future that includes and respects all traditions on the island.

“Irish nationalism needs to get down to the kind of work undertaken by Scottish nationalists in advance of their independence referendum. They produced a 600-page document that outlined how health and education would work, how infrastructure and investment opportunities could be developed. It’s time we put in the hard yards to transform our political aspiration into a cogent and compelling future for the people of this island.

Should the Alliance party take part in the discussions?

Addendum

"She said constitutional recognition of people with a British identity could help make a united Ireland more acceptable to unionists."

Somebody somewhere would at least create a vision of what a UI would look like, flags, anthems, constitution, the Dail, everything. Chatting about it in the theoretical doesn't serve any purpose. (One tiny detail as an example. One could have a united Ireland but still have a NI soccer team. GB have three teams in the World Cup and we have two already - would that change?). People need certainty. We have at least five years of debate and discussion ahead just to figure out this new country and learn from the past.

47 years after it was formed, the leader of a leading nationalist Party throughout that time says it's now time to work out what on earth it is they have been trying to achieve all this time. Cool.

Wrong "again" Triple K Ray .. it was formed to try to promote "Civil Rights" in an unjust sectarian one party state ... but like the word "equality", thats a dirty word(s) to Bigots & Racists like you isnt it old chap

Eastwood looks rather young for his years, what age did he become leader some 47 years ago?

If he is serious Eastwood should put his animosity towards the larger Nationalist party aside and agree an election pact like the Pro Union parties.

The one thing there that's certain is there will be only 1 Irish international football team, representing the whole island.

At least they were a Nationalist party who didn't go round blowing people up with no idea what they were "fighting" for

Why not keep two, double our chances? Britain gets to have three teams in every championship. not that it's helped them much.

I've been saying for years that a UI referendum will fail unless there is a consensus on the form it will take. Important part is getting Spain to not object to NI rejoining the EU as part of ROI.

There already is. They`re called Ireland. They represent all 32 counties, and can pick players from all 32 counties.

Apparently only in competitions where the IFA don't compete.

Ireland can pick players from all 32 counties.

The IFA are an irrelevance. No Irish citizen supports them.

YEs but according to a quick look on Wiki, FIFA have decided that in all competition where both Irish teams participate, we have to use the title 'Republic of Ireland.' And somewhere along the way, we obviously agreed to that.

That has already been agreed. It will be treated the same as East Germany was.

In the context of the EU side Brexit discussions this aspect has been covered and future proofed in the event of a vote for reunification. In terms of the North hard to see that SFcan credibly present the case for reunification to the Unionist side given their history, SDLP might be better placed, also the Sounthern SF sleveens are doing a great job in running the place down and talking out of both sides of their mouth on issues such as Irish water, taxes and so on ... The sooner they get a turn at the wheels it will expose them as the chancers they are..

Historically they picked Brits with Irish grannies.

15 of the US 94 squad were Brits.
