Mr. Eoghan Murphy, Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government announced that Orders have been made directing that bye-elections be held to fill the vacancies in the Seanad caused by the resignation of Senator Denis Landy and Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Senator Landy was elected from the Nominating Bodies Sub-Panel of the Agricultural Panel at the Seanad General Election in April 2016. Senator Ó Clochartaigh was elected from the Oireachtas Sub-Panel of the Agricultural Panel at the Seanad General Election in April 2016.

The last day for receiving nominations at the bye-elections will be 27 March, 2018 at 12 noon. The Seanad Returning Officer will sit for the ruling on nominations on 6 April, 2018. Ballot papers will be issued on 13 April, 2018 and the poll will close at 11 a.m. on 27 April, 2018.

The electorate for the bye-elections will be the members of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann.
so apparently FG and FF have decided to split these up between each other, FF taking the seat SF had and Fine Gael taking the Labour seat https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/fine-gael-and-fianna-fáil-eye-electoral-deal-on-seanad-vacancies-1.3398013?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/fine-gael-and-fianna-f%C3%A1il-eye-electoral-deal-on-seanad-vacancies-1.3398013 FG are going to have a Ulster anti-brexit farmer nominated, who are FF going to nominate? ST say Mark Durkan https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/unionists-vie-for-seanad-seat-m5qwm9fwb

ST says FF want to nominate Mark Durkan https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/unionists-vie-for-seanad-seat-m5qwm9fwb

does he any knowledge and practical experience of the following interests and services, namely, agriculture and allied interests, and fisheries? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Durkan

checking what he said about Seanad before.

2013 SDLP MP Mark Durkan said: “In relation to further reforms, I would like to see the Seanad (Senate) retained on an elected, regional basis – which of course would include members from the North.”

the Mail says Durkan didn't pass the the very unstrict agriculture knowledge and experience qualification requirement

How is the promised reform of the Seanad going I wonder? Reform was promised by the senators themselves when the referendum to abolish it was defeated but almost five years later what has been achieved?

There was some talk recently from Varadkar about a committee to consider the Manning Report proposals (extending vocational panels to everyone and the university panel to all third level institutions). However, even if implemented, they won't be for the next Dáil/Seanad but the one after that (if they even get around to that)! :) Like the Augustine quote: "Lord, make me pure—but just not yet."

It's a sham of an institution. I wish it was abolished in 2013. An electorate system where the very few can vote.
