A very interesting story, Gavin has done some digging on the OPW's costs to fit permanent security features to the homes of some politicians. The cost for one of our elites was €285,735, which is more the the cost of an average house.

Either these guys are very worried, or they are overspending once more.

Just how much extra security is need when these people have full time Gardai following their every move?

Add to this the cost of having 2 rooms (€2,000 per month) available 365 days a year for garda drivers (paid for even if they are not used) in a local FFr's house !

Security is a Garda call - not the individual politicians. Garda will make recommendations and OPW will then follow them.

It boils down to whether Garda believes there is a risk and, if so, the level of that risk.

What would the response be if OPW ignored Garda recommendations and a minister was attacked at their home?

According to recent reports in various media, Garda chiefs are seriously concerned that ministers will be attacked and have stepped up security around them. Louise Minihan's paint attack on Mary Harney seriously spooked cops because she was within the secure cordon and close enough to wound or kill Harney if she so wanted.
