Two self-driving buses have rolled out on to the public roads of Helsinki, Finland, alongside traffic and commuters, in one of the first trials of its kind.

The Easymile EZ-10 electric mini-buses, capable of carrying up to 12 people, will roam the open roads of Helsinki’s southernly Hernesaari district in a month-long trial, negotiating traffic for the first time.

Dublin bus drivers should be seeking a pay cut if they have any interest in maintaining a long term career imo

Excellent. And who exactly will tell yobs trying to get on the bus faff off? Who exactly will radio for the police and pull the bus over on their arrival to deal with hooliganism and violence on the buses?

Long term career as a bus driver, a career suggests promotion with the added salary increases.

Spot on. There would be a need for some sort of personnel to keep some sort of order, to help elderly people or tourists with directions... but no need for a bus-drivers licence.

Eh... CCTV should be able to solve that...

I don't ever remember a bus driver doing much when sh!t kicked off on buses I was on which monitored CCTV (or other passengers) couldn't do as quickly or as efficiently... most of the time it would consist of nothing more than making a phone call... so plaster the place with sitckers with emergency numbers to call in the event of hassle...

There are ways and means of doing this stuff without always having to listen to naysayers...

Whether it's a good idea to consign human beings to the dustbin is another thing... but people should have copped on by now that the jobs available at any time are changing far quicker than they ever did and that there's no such thing as a job/career for life...

Presumably at the first sign of trouble the bus will automatically seal it's doors, fill the cabin with chloroform and divert to the nearest Garda Station.

Nope, like a horse when it no longer wants you along for the ride, it will simply roll over and you better get off fast.

Looks like Finland is short of immigrants. NATO better start another war.

It's only a matter of time. Same with taxi drivers and Lorry drivers. Nothing to celebrate though.

Untimately transport will get a lot cheaper - most costs in transport are wages and insurance.

Have any of you actually seen the Finns drive? Häkkinen, Räikönen, Vatanen, Mäkinen...

I thought that they just tied off the steering wheel and stuck a block on the accelerator. Self driving buses would probably be a huge improvement over whatever Blänkönen they currently have.

A remote monitoring centre perhaps?
