O'Toole to opt out of Seanad election - The Irish Times - Fri, Nov 26, 2010

Couldn't find a thread, if there is one, feel free to merge.

The poll topper from 2007 is standing down and that really has to open things up for the next race. It is now the case that the government isn't going to bother with any Seanad reform at all.

It could see someone from the INTO try to run, though God knows that the last thing the Oireachtas probably lacks is another teacher (or solicitor or publican or auctioneer).

I have to wonder if Feargal Quinn might not consider whether it's worth the hassle, though the cost of contesting the seat isn't a concern for him and he has kept his profile up with television shows and the like. Defeated outgoing candidate in 2007 Brendan Ryan closed his website a while and I presume has decided enough was enough. Logic should suggest Valerie Breshnihan is best placed of those from the last election if she decides for another tilt.

Another of Bertie's hangers on calling it a day. Hopefully we'll get the referendum on closing the pigsty.

Spoofer O'Toole is very statesmanlike now calling for reform of public finances etc, but let it never be forgotten he was one of the proponents of benchmarking - calling it an ATM for his union. Now that the coffers are almost empty he is calling for restraint. And was it nor from his family circle that the huge price was paid for Thornton Hall for a new prison !

The lads in RTE will miss Joe.When he described benchmarking as being akin to getting money out of an ATM they were amazed at his cleverality. His ar** was licked clean on many a Sunday morning chat show.

No doubt his " talents" will be snapped up at once in the private sector.
