Current, Labour Senator, Michael McCarthy, faces stiff opposition in Clonakilty on Thursday night at the parties election convention. Two other candidates are also up for nomination Brendan Leahy and Gearoid Buckley. A former student President of CIT and current town Cllr of Bandon, Mr Buckley is leading the charge. There's no love lost between McCarthy and Leahy who fell out in spectacular style over an election pact at County Council level a number of years ago. Despite claiming a 9% first preference vote in the last election, many constituents feel McCarthy has went on the missing list for the last three years and Buckley is a better bet.

Leahy stands no chance. Buckley would be good - could be the baby of the next Dáil.

And Bandon could be without a candidate next time. mcCarthy might run indo if he doesn't get it though. He's a history of putting himself before his party.
Yes, didn't he do the same for the Senate election? Remember him in the last General Election driving around in a 4x4, some Socialist !!!

Personally, I reckon Labour should run Buckley and McCarthy, especially if FG are really running three. Cork SW votes so much on local geography that they wouldn't be cannibalising each other's votes all that much.

Fianna Fáil got a little less than 43% of the vote last time out.

They will probably around 20% this time round. I wouldn't be certain that their seat is still there.

The quota is 25% of the vote plus 1. Fianna Fáil will not get transfers. They'll need to come in at well over 20% to have the slightest chance.

They will have an uphill battle getting a seat in every three-seater in the country.

I know him well. He's a decent, hard-working activist. You obviously don't know the rugged lanes around Cork SW. He borrowed the 4X4. He'll get my vote.

Come on Mick!

Micheál Lehane on Morning Ireland Tuesday 29th November 2010:

"Senator Michael McCarthy has run a much much more effective operation on the ground since the 2007 General Election....Michael McCarthy the Senator would be seen as someone who could make progress this time"

Was I the only one who wondered who Senator May was on reading the thread title?

Can a Mod replace the higher case "M" in May with the correct lower case 'm'?

Pedantically yours

You wouldn't expect someone starting a trolling thread like this to be into such niceties?
